And the first game has began. Woohooo!!
Good luck peeps.

Iā€™m listening live on newstalkzb.co.nz/streaming/n ā€¦ eaming.asp
while i work.
Signed up too late to make a pick, but guess the Canes will win (Blues ahead while I write this).

Jim, are you trying to access it from work?
Coz, I simply clicked the link waited 5 seconds for the buffer and vioala it worked.
Maybe your employer blocks stream audio.

just click on the play icon (the pointy triangle thing) bottom left of the box. Iā€™m listening with firefox, but just checked it with IE and itā€™s working as well.
Maybe God is punishing you for watching too much porn.

OK. I found some commentary at Sky Sports, but itā€™s not a bloke talking, itā€™s a bloke typing.

Geez, this game is awesome. The new rules are forcing a much quicker game and while the guys are adapting the penalties are flowing.
Stephen Brett (Blues), Maā€™a Nonu and Conrad Smith (Hurricanes) are having huge games.

If this game is anything to go by weā€™re in for a treat this weekend and the rest of the season!

Edit: Actually, I should say that unless you have the new laws completely in hand and can still manage to slow the game down (which I doubt will be the case, at least in the first few weeks), teams like the Bulls and Waratahs are going to suffer while teams like the Chiefs and Reds are going to run wild.

The Blues really chucked that away. The Elf is in the lead!

If you are like me and canā€™t catch the game live, it is on the MOD at 6pm tonite. The Stumblies v Farce is on at 8.30pmā€¦the channel is Australia Network which is channel 76 on my MOD system.Sadists v Highlanders at 2.30pm and Horrortahs v Reds at 4.30pm tomorrow.Good luck to one and all (cept JP of course) with your picksā€¦Goooo Canes!

I hate watching Bryan Habana playing in that blue Stormers jersey. Surely he realises itā€™s the wrong toneā€¦

Habana wants to spend some time at the beach like the rest of us is all.Looks like he might have a chance to get the ball in space too.
Gotta feel for those poor Redsā€¦sooo close and yet soo far.

Yeah, shame. Pity. They nearly pulled it off.

The first week is over and Tosserpete has the yellow cap! Good job!

Tosserpete is also the only player to have correctly predicted the winner in all 7 games! :bravo: :notworthy:

What do you guys think of the new rules? (not new rules actually, just correct/stricter refereeing of the old ones)

At the moment, they are generally resulting in more penalties as the players get their heads around them, but will hopefully result in a more free-flowing game with less interference at the breakdown.

Most of the games that I saw this weekend didnā€™t really come to much, but I guess itā€™s only the first week. Itā€™s great to be watching some good sport again though!

From what I saw, there was less aimless kicking, fewer reset scrums and fewer turnovers. The breakdown has been a nightmare for players, refs and fans for a loooong time.Hopefully stricter interpretation of the laws will stop defensive players trying to slow down or kill the opposition ball at EVERY tackle situation. Rugby is a cheats game and a game where contesting possession is paramount, but defenders who refuse to roll away post tackle should get carded as they arenā€™t competing for the ball. Fewer turnovers will lead to more teams running the ball and less aerial ping-pong

I like the new interpretations. Canā€™t see any of the nothern hemisphere teams liking them very much thoughā€¦ :unamused:

It was a great opening weekend for the Super 14. Some very exciting games. My beloved Tahā€™s getting out of jail in the last minute was memorable and the last 4 mins of the Sharks and Chiefs was unbelievable!

Thanks for the yellow cap  alas iā€™m sure it will be temporary as there are some real nightmare picks to be made next round. Looking at the way the Reds are playing under McKenzie, they could trouble the Crusaders and have done so before. Blues playing Highlanders at home could go either way. And the rest arenā€™t any easierā€¦ :ponder:

Best thing about being in the tipping competition is it makes watching ALL the games much more exciting. I think i cheered just as loudly when the Lions scored a try, to bring the margin back to 13,as i did when Palu scored to get the Tahs home. :roflmao:

Cheers
Tosserpete

The loose is my favourite part of a rugby match. The only thing that excites me more than a fresh 2-litre bottle of Scotch is turnovers. ESPECIALLY when theyā€™ve been gotten by cheating. Hence, my no.1 player in the current game: Richie McCaw.

I like cheating. Itā€™s bloody well part of rugby. Letā€™s hope it doesnā€™t get too sterile.

I also noticed that the off side line was being policed with more vigilance in the opening round, I hope this continues. I think I read somewhere that the refs are being made available for post match interviews, did anyone see any?? Did they spout the same cliched crap the players (especially NZ and Saffer) do??

I think the new interpretations are making the game flow better and have certainly speeded it up. However, TBO I think Stu Dickinson was the only ref that really did it properly in the Hurricanes vs Blues game. Especially regarding the tackle and releasing immediately, and moving away before challenging for the ball and staying on your feet. Sure, there were a lot of penalties in that game, but that was a result of the players adapting to the new interpretations. The second half went much better.
If the ref in the Reds game blew like Dickinson then the Reds wouldā€™ve won that game
I was surprised that the Bulls took to it so easily, but in a way the have a very dangerous attacking style that was good last year and can be easily adapted to the new interpretations.

I also think itā€™s made it more competitive.

Nope, I didnā€™t see any of that. But during the Sharks vs Chiefs game John Smit had some interesting discussions on the field with the ref.

I dunno. I really donā€™t want to see the Great Game become rugby league. And thatā€™s where itā€™s heading. Please the crowds. More tries. Bollocks.
