Serious Political Pictures

Well, you can agree or disagree with the law and its intent. That’s not what I did here.

My apologies then, I read your original post as being in support of it in spite of all the obvious evidence against it! :upside_down_face:

Nope. I just find meme news to be mostly bullshit. A tiny bit of digging shows how unserious that picture is.

So which points of that meme do you disagree with:

  • 70% of voters preferred legalization
  • the Texas state government went against the will of the voters
  • Texas incarceration rates have been going down
  • Texas for-profit prisons are starting to lose money

(A hint - only one of those is false.)

And it’s all an example of shifting the burden of proof. :joy:

Post the actual polling methodology and primary sources for those four claims instead of asking me to deconstruct a meme.

Again, this is the serious political pictures thread.

You first!

You disagreed with the meme, and then stated that:

But your response to @qbert seemed to support the meme more than anything, so I’m hoping you have more to show for that tiny bit of digging! :joy:

Aside from saying people still smoke weed in Texas, and the cops can be jerks about it, I haven’t brought up a policy issue from a standpoint of supporting it or not.

It’s an unsourced bullshit meme from a biased source—NORML — and the facts it claims to state are really just propaganda.

Pointing out that a NORML meme is unsourced propaganda isn’t taking a policy position. If you can’t post the primary data behind the graphic you shared, just say so. Qbert didn’t either.

The meme is not from NORML, those were just the first links I found, but here’s more for you:

Texas incarceration rate decline

Texan voter support for marijuana legalization

The lie in the meme is the last line, private prisons account for only ~6% of Texas incarceration, though they are the largest private prison state for Federal, but there is minimal hand-off between state arrests and Federal so we won’t count that - and the 6% private are actually enjoying record profits in spite of the overall decline in prison populations across the state.

But the rest of it is 100% accurate, and the deeper numbers around marijuana arrests are actually worse than the meme would suggest, not because of gross volume increase in arrests per se, but because those that are imprisoned under the new laws will have their lives effectively ruined, (read the links for more info).

This concession, the lie about for-profit prisons, isn’t a minor detail.

It’s the core thesis: Greedy prisons are losing money so laws change to send stoners to prison.

But, as you have discovered, it’s not true.

And this happily proves my only point: bullshit memes aren’t serious political pictures. It’s just laziness. A hodgepodge of unsourced information slapped together like a red yarn conspiracy board.

Just the usual doom
Scroll epiphany some people seem to be infected with these days. But I appreciate your time and wonder if you now have as much free time as I do to follow through on very serious issues!

I never said it was! :joy:

My original response to it referred only to the Texas government’s lack of fidelity to the democratic process, which the meme calls out quite truthfully. :man_shrugging:

Well, in my digging, there seem to be problems with that 70% figure as well! lol , but I’ve long lost interest.

Alahu akkbar, asshole.

TO BE EXECUTED MAJOR NIDAL HASSAN
Nidal Hassan murdered 14 U.S. troops, yelling “Alahu Akkbar” as he poured fire out on defenseless troops.

Time
To meet Elvis.

First U.S Military Execution in 64 Years — Army Major Nidal Hasan To Be Executed

Just one of many indicators that they are committing class warfare at never-before-seen levels against the American people.

The shamelessness truly is something to behold.

Class warfare? That dude was a O-4 officer pulling in $100+k most likely— presumably with lots of ancillary benefits like
Housing and family insurance .

The framing of the meme is shamelessly ignorant and hyperbolic.

The actual situation involved a reported communication (or processing issue) about a limited set of combat-related items on a final paycheck—hostile fire/imminent danger pay (capped at $225/month) and the associated tax exclusion—after a service member who had been deployed only about a week. The legal rationale given (“no formal declaration of war”) does not match the statutes, the relevant area designations already existed or were expanded, and the Air Force audited the case and stated the family received the entitlements owed.

I thought this was the serious pics thread. :joy:

Baseball not on yet for you i guess huh:

There’s the more nuanced version. It’s still problematic.

Pity you seem unable to fine-tooth comb “grokvestigate” the Dear Leader you voted for in remotely the same manner as you nitpick me. :joy:

The Pentagon does not count the deaths of four additional service members, all of whom were killed during an Iranian ballistic missile attack in Jordan in late July, as part of the operation’s fatality toll.

She doesn’t get to define or determine what “war”means to the pentagon or Congress , or what constitutes a war theater. :bomb: :performing_arts:

It’s tragic her husband died, but he was military, and his “Not even wanting to be there,” is irrelevant. It’s gonna be hard to get the Air Force or the Pentagon to change their minds. One can hope, I suppose. Stranger things have happened.

And it’s on a larger than meme platform now, so maybe she will get some relief.

Speaking of serious political pictures:

I’ve seen this Lindsay Clancy murders her young children story and threw herself out a window story for weeks now, but didn’t really follow it. The court drama picked up with people supporting this woman and apparently some dude in the jury simply wouldn’t cave. There’s some reports that the jury fore-person called him an incel pos and stated he’s “never get laid in this town.”

There’s zero belief that she didn’t strangle her kiddos — she admitted it. She was sadz.

And now so other woman apparently obsessed with this case has murder HER kid. :scream:

BREAKING: 38-year old woman from :united_states: Frankfort, Illinois, has been charged with murder of her two-year old son, with court documents claiming she had ‘become very invested’ in Lindsay Clancy murder trial.

The point, which you seem to be completely missing, is that the American government (both parties!) will go to war at the drop of a hat while crossing their fingers behind their back (war? what war?) to avoid any of the rules, regulations and responsibilities that should go with such an act.
