Shiny, Happy, Danes: Truth or Fiction?

According to a survey by the University of Cambridge, the Danes have been deemed to be the happiest/most content nation in Europe.

Why is this?
One would think that with high taxes, dark winter days, cobbled streets, and a nauseating over-abundance of open-face sandwiches would have them as dour and grumpy as the Saxons.

They have nice buns.

With Denmark, Sweden and The Netherlands in the top five, clearly there is a lot to be said for liberal social democracies with thriving porn industries. Looking at the bottom five, it seems countries with strong religious influence in society are more miserable. France may be explained by the French slowly coming to terms with the sad realization that they are French.

So, more sex and drugs equals happiness. Religion, God and Frenchness equals misery.

Mr. He is certainly one of the nicest foreigners I’ve met in Taiwan, and he’s a Great Dane.

Look at 1, 2, and 4 in the top 5.

Doesn’t anyone listen to me? It’s the akvavit I tell ya.

Well, not really. :raspberry: However you are right. Booze, sex and drugs: all good. The pope, French and over-bearing mothers in black: bad.

Is it that time of the month for Geraldine?

I lived in DK for 3 years and I can attest that there are ‘Summer Danes’ and then there are ‘Winter Danes’. This survey was probably done during the spring/summer months. Sitting along the canals of Nyhavn, sipping Tuborg beer, clear blue skies, daylight until 11pm, 24C, low humidity, almost 0% pollution, no traffic jams, etc etc… it’s truly a slice of heaven on earth.

Come winter, it’s a whole different story…

Yeah, sipping beer if you can afford it …

Geraldine doesn’t, you know, have that monthly thing. Great for me and one of the beauties of having an inflatable life partner. She has 39 nipple patches now due to over-inflation on Tuesday morning. :frowning:

A real happy dane loves the winter as much as the summer…(where’s that Viking picture I need…). And there is nothing more beautiful than the spring and autum in DK.

But a real happy dane is only real happy IN Denmark  …Ai yo, I sure miss my country…

But to shed some light on it, I would think that the danes feel more secure about their future. Not like in Taiwan where everybody worries about how to survive. Denmark has a social wellfare that is very good and provides security, which makes people more relaxed. I guess…

ps. the thing about porn - why is that still a subject that people think of when hearing about Denmark?
I just don’t get it, because there’s porn in every country. I would even say that USA has the biggest pornindustry?

Does the people of Denmark really have more sex than other? And is there more drugs there too?

Thank you for the nice words merge, wonder when The Ginger man is going to beat a path to my door - again.

Hmmm, yes winter Danes and summer danes.

OK, I only go back home 2 times a year - July and Xmass. I don’t really find that there’s any difference in peoples moods, but sure as hell, people would seem happier sitting outside at Nyhavn (now, that’s something I miss) in the summer than they would feel sitting outside during say a snowy january night.

I think that a lot of the reason behind all this happiness is that the economy is good (overall rated to be the best managed globally by some finance whizzes), housing price increases have lined peoples pockets a fair bit, the balance of payments is very positive, the same thing goes for the govt budget, unemployment is low, and news in general are better than they have been for a long time.

I agree with what you say. But it is still the Akvavit I tell you.

Oh and lefsa and gjetost. The holy trinity. (forget the lutefisk)

Where did the Norwegians score? Of course I know we “scored” everywhere. I mean in the list.

Here you go X3M (damn you I’ve look everywhere to find a picture small enough to be an avatar and you found it)

The one, the only, the best:

that’s why u never buy beer from the bars/restaurants in Nyhavn… u just hop over to the kiosks around the corner and buy the plastic tuborg beer bottles and get harrassed by the folks who collect the empty bottles…

hey, i recall that akvavit. isn’t that the norwegian one which apparently is shipped from norway down south and then back up again. i had that with reindeer stew made with gjetost once. yummy

elektronisk:
You know Google is your friend.

I think Norwegians didn’t do too well in this one, due to a government which is a bit too controlling in peoples’ everyday life - not to mention taxes and all kind of duties and fees to make everything expensive.
