Well they probably could have if they had the stomach for it. It wouldn’t be much fun at night being an Argetenian consript knowing Ghurkas and Paratoopers were coming to kill you and make necklaces from their ears.
Laughing my ass off So blunt and confrontational with the press. Like Liberace or Elvis on crack! I really hope he gets to do his regulatory reform agenda. Would be so fun to watch. https://twitter.com/i/status/1692178275731485002
In an interview following his unexpected primary victory on Aug. 13, the outsider candidate has given international policymakers the biggest insight yet in how he would conduct Argentina’s affairs on the world stage.
“People are not free in China, they can’t do what they want and when they do it, they get killed,” he told Bloomberg News on Wednesday, referring to Beijing’s government. “Would you trade with an assassin?”
Haven’t finished watching it yet, but I don’t think he’s really thought through some of his positions. I get the very uncomfortable feeling of watching someone who is repeating things he’s read in books, and there’s something off with his body language. He doesn’t seem at ease with what he’s saying.
Who knows, he might be the right man for the job at this particular moment in history. The radical left does need to be radically smacked down. But I don’t think his ideas translate to sensible public policies.
I absolutely hope this dude wins!!! Argentina should be rich and, until the 1930’s was well on its way to becoming a first-world nation. Then came Peronism, which is essentially socialism.
“Mr Milei invariably spouts sweary, hyperbolic invective on stage. Highlights include calling a female journalist a “donkey” and accusing his compatriot Pope Francis of being an “imbecile” and “representative of evil on earth”.”
Once in 2018, responding to a question about economic strategies by local journalist Teresa Fria, Milei shouted: “It’s not that I am a totalitarian. I’m just saying that you are a she-donkey , and you talk of things you don’t know. You just talked like a donkey and what I am doing now is un-donkeying you!”
A foul-mouthed, far-right populist who has been described as a cross between Boris Johnson and the killer doll Chucky is in pole position to become president of South America’s second-largest economy as Argentina chooses its next leader on Sunday against a backdrop of anti-establishment fury and economic disarray.
I’ve watched a few interviews with this guy now and he still strikes me as a clown, but “the Left” really do have only themselves to blame for the fact that they’re getting trounced in elections by people like Milei, or at least being given a run for their money. The pathetic part is that they seem to have not the faintest idea why the electorate are sick of them, so while I don’t have much time for characters like Milei, I’m happy to see the architects of clownworld losing elections all over the world.
I think it’s a great pity that governments can’t just focus on the tedious, uninteresting parts of being a government - things like keeping the infrastructure in good repair, making sure criminals aren’t left to run riot, making sure the garbage is collected, and not wasting vast amounts of cash on ‘emergencies’ and wars. These issues are neither ‘left’ nor ‘right’, but they’re what the average person (IMO) thinks government is for.
Agreed. Left vs Right divisive debates don’t benefit most people. Also Argentina is an unusual country looking at it’s history and instability over the last 100 years or so yet having huge natural resources and a good headstart in life so to speak.
I wonder if their unusual geographic position causes it but then I look at Australia and NZ and say…nah.
IMO that particular “initiative” hurts pretty much everyone except the ultra-rich who get the juicy contracts.
The really stupid part is this: the people who are claiming that they know how to solve the most complex, far-reaching, and challenging problem that humanity has ever faced (supposedly) are the exact same people who can’t fix potholes in the roads, arrange some basic medical cover, or prevent thousands of unidentified criminals streaming in from third-world shitholes. When they prove that they can at least manage a pissup in a brewery, I might be slightly more inclined to believe that they can pull off planet-changing miracles.
Argentina used to have the largest gold reserves in the world. Then Peron looted the treasury. Then Eva Peron, a semi-pro prostitute who married Juan, took power. She continued the looting, as did those who came after. Juan was a great admirer of Hitler, and liked his socialistic ways.
And those on the left admire Eva (Evita), just as they think Che Guevera (also an Argentine) was a great hero. He murdered hundreds in the stadium after Castro took over, using mostly a baseball bat. Great hero.
