:facebook: Starting July, Passengers with Drunk Drivers will also be fined

You can’t kill someone “drunk walking” into them. You can if you’re drunk on a bicycle. Not as easy as a car, but possible. The example was already made pretty clearly.

how

Again, it’s unlikely, but definitely possible to kill someone while riding a bicycle. You could run into someone and knock them into a moving car. You could run into someone and they crack their head on the sidewalk after you hit them. Yes, it’s not likely, but it can happen. In fact…

It has happened.

people don’t ride like that here Mac. they ride at 3 mph and only look directly ahead of them. zero observations, drunk or sober. you could also knock someone over from walking if you were being as irresponsible as this cyclist. personally i think this drunking biking law is more to do with e-bikes than anything else.

This news is really interesting, today is July 1st and the implementation starts now.

I’ve definitely seen some dangerous cyclists in Taiwan before, though I agree with you that the majority of people in Taiwan ride very slowly. You might be right about the fine being about e-bikes, but I would guess that it is just a prudent thing to have on the books. If you have a statute that explicitly imposes legal consequences for riding a bicycle while intoxicated, it makes it much easier to impose liability on a cyclist who causes any sort of damage while drunk.

That guy infuriates me. He blames the victim and says her fatal accident will “teach her a lesson to respect cyclists”? What a sociopath.

Are these the current limits? Is that BAC or BrAC? I’m having trouble finding a calculator that will tell me how much I’d have to drink to hit 0.15 mg/L, but it seems like … quite a lot?

From the word on the street I thought the effective limit was basically zero these days.

Here you go, mate.

0.15 mg/L is very low threshold level. Maybe 4 cans of beer?
I guess for most drinker, it didn’t even feel like a proper drink.

It is disturbing. How can you have no remorse after killing an innocent person?

4 cans of beer is a lot more than I thought was legal!

2 pints?
That’s only your second glass.
Come on!

I’m waiting for the first news story about someone getting fined that wasn’t drinking and only riding in the car.

Maybe K-man will jump on that and beat out the Philippine OFW news in Taiwan.
