Well, it’s not too far to Jici where it’s most definitely cleaner. Someone warned me about water safety at Jici Beach. It seemed safe to me last summer when I went with my family. Anyone heard anything about that? Would like to surf there this summer. Decent rentals for a beginner like me.
I haven’t been to Jici but it looks pretty good. From the pics it looks like there could be riptides, maybe that is what you were warned against.
I took a bus ride to check out a beach in Shuilian, closer to Hualien than Jici, but i can’t recommend it as it was not very appealing for swimming- very small and pretty much taken over by fishermen. But the cemetery there was strange, it looked like many of the crypts had been robbed and/or vandalized.
