Taiwan’s May consumer price index (CPI) has surpassed the 2% warning marker for inflation, spurred by record-high rent and rising produce prices.

TIL: Taipei Times thinks neighborhoods in what are essentially random counties (correction: it says Hsinchu City) of Taiwan are on the same level as NYC
Well you wouldn’t doubt those stats if you actually lived in my neighborhood. I shared the stats with my gf and she feels they’re too low even. Everybody here is a manager at Mediatek or a principal engineer at TSMC or something like that. Quite ridiculous.
Also it’s government stats not Taipei Times stats.
I was referring to the use of “borough” instead of “neighborhood”. I was pretty sure that was an NYC only name (though apparently it’s also used in some places in New Jersey and was used in England and Scotland to refer to a very specific kind of township once upon a time). I’ve never heard “區” translated to anything but “district” or “neighborhood”.
Barrio in Spanish
Ok, but outside of NYC, where have you ever heard it used in the English language?

Annual growth forecast upgraded to 4.6%
To be clear: that’s a year-on-year percentage forecast, according to that article.
Guy
What else could it be?
YTD?
Guy
If it’s YTD then it’s not a forecast. A forecast is about the future.
Like Yogi Berra said, prediction is hard, especially about the future.
In what other country is 2% inflation a problem?

The Q2 growth was actually lower than projected. What makes them adjust predictions upward like that?
Pretty sure the ING article is talking about recent market forecasts
Taiwan’s GDP per capita has surpassed Japan this year and is expected to overtake South Korea.
Regarding per capita GDP, the minister said the goal is for Taiwan’s per capita GDP to surpass that of South Korea starting in 2025, with the gap continuing to widen. Taiwan’s per capita GDP is expected to exceed US$40,000 by 2027, and its nominal GDP could approach one trillion US dollars by 2028.
Liu said that after surpassing Japan and South Korea, his dream is for Taiwan to surpass Israel, as Israel is similar in size to Taiwan. According to International Monetary Fund (IMF) data, Israel’s 2023 per capita GDP was approximately US$55,000.
NDC director doing his job.
But I thought we passed up Korea two years ago. How many times are we going to pass Korea?
Since the figures are presented in USD, “passing” a country depends on current exchange rates. So I suppose Taiwan can keep falling behind, and then pass, again and again, providing lots of chances for government officials to announce some good news!
