Funny, I’m shocked with how QUIET Taipei is.
That is a valuable sound. Every time I hear it on the road it sends the fear of death into me and I watch out for buses.
As a pedestrian it probably doesn’t mean so much but if you are riding a scooter its an important sound.
Imo the worst sound of Taiwan is the roar of a bunch of scooters plowing down the road. Its just an inherently horrible sound and instantly makes me annoyed. I was in Thailand recently and it was even an improvement on Taiwan sound wise. I guess Taiwanese people grow up with this sound so they all secretly love it.
Yeah it’s horrible but they seem immune to it .
You probably doesn’t live in front of a red light or an intersection and have to hear those constant repetitive loud beeping sound
Scooter are loud I admit it, and buses are 2 times louder than scooters, their engine probably date from the WWII. Each time they wait and speed in front of my house is like an explosion… Horrible.
Yes never live near a corner in Taiwan.
I live on top of a bus stop. That sound is nothing compared to the drone of scooters, and it might save your life. There are also infinitely more scooters than buses here. Sorry but you are wrong on this one.
So i’m wrong because you’re not bothered by the loud beeping and repetitive sound… For me scooter don’t bother me, so it’s fine?
Watch this video and hear how loud is it … https://www.youtube.com/shorts/0TMianQIbH0
the bus is waiting and beeping for nothing, then going straight, and it’s like this every minute. 3 bus stops in front of the place, plus a red light where they need to turn right or left, they never go straight, so hundred percent of them will beep.
I think it could be interesting to put alarms every 200 metters in the street, to wake up the zombies that are driving on the road, it may save life ! why not. And louder the alarms, it may save life ! Btw, this beeping law only exist in taiwan… how do they do in other countries? they just can take consideration of the yellow blinking light? maybe!
Btw, i’m wrong but many people complains !
the European chamber of commerce even wrote and article 2 months ago :
I’m wrong because it doesn’t bother you? That’s the problem in this world. because it doesn’t bother you i’m wrong?
taiwanese people complain about it

Loud beeping at every turn?
Yet drivers still run over pedestrians.
Yet pedestrians still stare at their phones / videos when strolling across streets.
Terrible habits abound here. How can they be changed?
No I don’t expect you to have an answer. I wish I had one.
Guy
Answers there are many. Political and social will, very little.
It also varies enormously where you live. Live close to a university campus with kids spending their daddy’s money on fart sounding cars/scooters? It’s loud. Live in more “geezer” neighborhood and there’s less of that.
You are wrong because its not as loud or frequent as the other noises from the road, and it has a purpose. The buses drive like maniacs, go check out the traffic threads. I really don’t mind that they have a mobile warning noise because they are fucking dangerous.
If i were to tackle noise issues it would first be those bikes and cars with the modified exhausts, then scooters in general. Buses, I’m not even sure if they would make 3rd place. Yes they are loud but keep things in perspective here.
There is a plan to replace all combustion buses with electric ones. I think the plan was to make it for 2030. It will probably be delayed, but it’s true that there are more and more e-buses these days.
As with many other things, people here are not as aware of the problems of noise. For some reason, some bus lanes (specially small buses) think it is a good idea to blast everybody’s eardrums every time the stop at the next station button is pushed.
Anyway, scooters are by far the worst.
Well, scooters, if they don’t modify the pipe exhaust, it’s 70-80 db. The beeping sound is 95 decibel legally but reach easily 100 to 110 decibels because it’s the far west here and they don’t check anything. It’s not only buses. But trucks, mini vans, blue trucks, construction trucks, ubike trucks, school buses. It also depends where you live. I live at an intersections with a red light and 3 bus stops. There are these kind of vehicles with those beeping sound in front of my house every 30 seconds. It is beeping constantly… it almost never stops. So 80 db for scooters vs 95 to 110 decibel constant repetitive beeping. Sorry, but YOU are wrong. You can mesure the volume of these beeping shit… it’s way louder than a scooter.
ex here : https://youtube.com/shorts/L35LuhcCRks
it’s totally INSANE !
and a scooter are loud but they are going forward, it never stay loud in front of your place for minutes. those beeping sound are staying and just down my place waiting at a red light. it’s unbearable.
Anyway, we’re in 2024, have you heard about weak user detection ?
You say there is a reason for this beeping sound? Safety? How do they do in other countries then? And based on the excuse that “it may safe life” so we can’t say anything? Isnt already loud enough in that country ? so they put extra noise for “safety” ahahah what a circus. Yes why not 145 decibel then it may save life ! why not put those alarms to every cars ! it may save life ! Start from now I will honk too, it may save life ! So ridiculous.
yes it may save life… they are beeping because they stop at a bus stop. The turn degree? 4°. Risk of killing a scooter? Zero. But beeping. Extra noise made for… nothing.
Then they are beeping when they start from the bus stop. The turn degree? 4°. Risk of killing a scooter? Zero. But beeping. Extra noise made for… nothing.
They are waiting at a red light for 60 to 90 seconds. The risk of killing someone when not moving, not turning? Zero. Extra noise made for … nothing.
They only kill when they turn 95 degree and when a scooter is on its side. means, they only go slow when turning 95 degree, why put those alarms so loud when it’s only to be hear at 2m max from the bus?
In 99,9% of other countries, people just know that we don’t stand beside a bus, people know that a car with a yellow blinking light on the side will turn on that direction.
Btw, you say it may save life? Have you read this article ? Attention: Turning vehicle!
it shows that since the law is effective, the accidents increased… so it’s not even working. This country is beeping constantly at every intersections. They don’t even take it in consideration anymore.
If you ask the taiwanese, they will say : we’re used to it. So why making so much noise if they don’t even hear it ! ahahaha the stupidity is touching the sky here.
And blind spot detections exists in 2024, beeping is too retarded ! Blind Spot Detection - EXEROS Technologies
I feel that the combination of scooters over accelerating is greater that 80 db.
No i am not wrong, its not 1 scooter is it you tart there are a million of them. Stop talking nonsense.
I live above a busy road with single glazed windows. The sound of buses beeping isnt a fraction of the overall traffic noise. They are only loud when you are stood right next to them.
Risk of killing zero??? How do you fathom that? They cross over multiple lanes when they need to stop and good luck if you are in their way.
You need 10 scooters at 80 db to reach 83 db.
so you have 20 scooters at 80, it will be max 86. Not even 95 at the legal max noise. And if you mesure close to a bus, it reaches sometimes 110 db. It’s totally insane. And when you have nothing but buses in front of your place, you hear those alarms very noisy and very ANOYING ! How can you handle a constant beeep beeeep beeep in front of your place ? Don’t tell me it can save life when there is not even a cat on the street… save who ? when there is NOBODY? 6 communites have complained in tamsui about those alarms. There are many complians, i can’t send all the link i have in one message, here some :
