It’s been serval years since this topic came up. After living in Italy and UK and traveling to many European countries the last few years, I understand why the OP is freaked out.
He is from the Netherlands and I’ve been now several times. Bikes are the king of the road there if you walk expecting the same pedestrian/bike/car dynamic in Taiwan. You will probably get hit…
But to say compared to Europe, I’m not sure if the OP has spent enough time in Italy. It can be pretty loud and crazy here too. Especially in the south or Rome.
Yes, risk of killing someone when stopping and waiting at the bus stop is … zero… how can he kill someone when he doesn’t even move? Who is stupid here? can you think? are you a zombie robot or what
I don’t say the there is no problem with scooters. They are loud! They should promote more the electric scooters here like in China.
But the beeping is very annoying and very loud, especially when they wait in front of your place and beeping for nothing. At least, they should put the alarms when there is someone, when they move, when they turn. Not when they wait, not when they don’t turn, not when there is nobody. I can see the buses in front of my place at 5am in the morning, keep beeping with zero respect, while they could just turn on the signal when the light is green.
Imagine the family living just there… they need to hear those alarms for nothing
Yes risk of killing someone from this bus, while he was waiting, not moving, and then going straight was ZERO. Just common sense.
I never said they are not a problem. I said keep things in perspective.
And scooters cannot be removed over night sure but those illegal exhausts can be dealt with in a serious matter if they wanted.
Scooters should be gradually shifted to electric i agree. And the reduction in noise pollution it would cause by changing to electric should be a big factor. But its never gonna happen nobody gives a flying fuck lets be real about it.
Well, true, most of taiwanese even laugh at me when I ask if they find it noisy. They like the noise, they add extra noise everywhere, extra alarms, in parking entrance/exit, in the basement parking, inside the elevator, they put a speaker that repeat they stupid promotion nonsense all day long without anybody saying anything about it… I know I won’t finish my life here…

i totally agree with @julien
the constant beeping sound is so much more annoying than the scooter (which are really annoying too). the beeping sound seems to travel much further. even up on the 12th floor and in my apartment set back from the main street the beeping sound just echoes through the alley and is incredibly noisy.
my office is on the 19th floor on a taipei main street and i hear humming sounds from the scooters but the noisy ‘beep beep beep beep’ from a bus standing 90 seconds on the red light is so much louder.
it is supposed to serve a purpose but with all the buses still killing pedestrians i dont think its the right solution
