So, your wife got U.S. citizenship and you want Taiwan citizenship and renounce U.S. citizenship.
Since she has U.S. citizenship, she has to do all that FATCA now even if you renounce your US citizenship, right?
So, how you get around that (i.e., she has US citizenship, but you, eventually planned, do not) unless you file separately and she has no bank accounts/assets overseas.
What’s missing here in your renouncement plan?
I think the only thing that could change that front-line bureaucrat’s mind is a gongwen sent from her superiors in the MOI or from another relevant government agency. Otherwise yes I agree she will continue to dig in . . .
She’s a Taiwanese citizen so renunciation would be an easy process for her – other than having to pay $2,400 US for the privilege of leaving. Once she gets a taste of the joys of being a US citizen abroad I’m sure she’ll soon realize that the “American dream” isn’t what it used to be.
So talked to several officials and was told checking for dual nationality is a requirement only in Taipei City when HHR forwards your application to the city. They will kick it back down to HHR if this question is not answered. Strangely MOI doesn’t check. Was told to leave Taipei city and I should be fine
I think this is a good case for an administrative appeal, as the city gov has no power on deciding on the eligibility of naturalisation applications, that’s MOI exclusive jurisdiction, they just forward the docs they received from HHR.
Quite a stupid process, very silly. Only to keep more ppl busy I guess, salary-factory!
Similar inconsistencies exist with the Taipei City tax officials, who are famously more strict about requesting certain documents for deductions than their peers in other municipalities. This just seems to be how national government officials in Taipei City roll . . .
I’d be tempted to not try to call attention to this as the government will err on the side of just codifying the requirement to renounce all citizenships rather than correct the inconsistency
There is no such exception. You still need to serve for 12 months but you can go home after the day instead of having to sleep in a dorm. They also obviously place you in the same city where you live.
Couple of weeks ago changed my address to New Taipei, waited for my replacement ARC with new address to arrive, and went to process my naturalization at Banqiao HHR on Friday. Staff was extremely helpful and put my application together. All documents and payment submitted and confirmation of naturalization application review showed up on the HHR website. Today I get a call from the HHR person helping me saying he is ready to forward my application but wants me to know i will be required to renounce both citizenships within a year of approval. I tell him i know of other people that were only required to renounce one and he said MOI already knows I have two nationalities from entering with two different passports. I tell him others have even changed nationalities on their ARC and only required to renounce one. He said he is fine either way and can move forward with my application but just wants me to be aware i will be required to renounce both. Not sure what move to make next. Do i just move forward and deal with future issues as they come?
