Does it matter where these people come from? They could have retained APRC’s and not chosen to naturalize.
You are wrong on thinking most of them can gain back their nationality. They cannot. Most SEA nations these people have come from do not allow dual citizenship. Thailand Indonesia Malaysia Vietnam do not allow dual citizenship. Most are Vietnamese who gave up a lot to live there lives here as citizens. Unlike many westerners they went to school here to learn to read and write Chinese and have integrated into society. They cannot resume Vietnamese citizenship. Would they like to be able to get it back? Sure they would also like their countries to allow dual citizenship.
Many are from Philippines which before also did not allow dual citizenship but now allows that and for ex Philippine nationals to resume. So they benefitted from a change in Philippine law. So be it.
White collar workers can’t resume citizenship? Only a few countries don’t allow that which to me is not important. I didn’t become a citizen here to worry about having citizenship elsewhere and I do acknowledge for some that is a concern. No ones citizenship is more important than another persons. I get this I came from a western country my citizenship if more valuable lol
I have to let you in on a little secret, nobody in Taiwan gives a rats arse what citizenship you have when it comes to naturalization. I chose to get citizenship for the benefits of having it for living in Taiwan, not for where I can travel on a Taiwan passport, or getting easier entry into China. Cry me a river when someone says Oh I would need a visa to visit my home country lol
Most westerners come from countries that Taiwan passports dont need a visa for in the first place.
You don’t get any browny points because you have a “western passport” or have a Gold Card, or JFRV or APRC. Some elites like @fifieldt I am happy they don’t need to renounce. Good on them if they meet the requirements for that.
The rest of us… well we mull over the renunciation laws. A few are able to resume, a few already have dual citizenship elsewhere and choose which citizenship to renounce. Cursed with decisions and choices which are killing us softly. Anyway renunciation rules… it is what it is.
Are educators any different than other immigrants? I believe you are well qualified with masters in Education? For your profession you are well trained.
Most western educators in Taiwan do not have degrees in Education.
I know many like myself with no tertiary education. High school it is.
Now you could naturalize and then have your wife sponsor you for a green card for the USA. But why bother? What you cannot with a JFRV you can do in your wifes name. So ARC you cannot own farmland which a citizen can own. Is that an issue for you wanting to buy land? I know APRC JFRV holders who naturalized to buy land in their own name rather than in another persons name.
I cannot own the land I live on as not indigenous.
Woe is me it’s in my wifes name lol.
I just get a call to pick up my TARC.
Can I just use the TARC to go out and enter Taiwan? Or I need a Taiwan passport? Is this passport with TARC different than when I get my ID?
Now I have to do the most tidius part that is to get the proof that I can’t renounce.
I’d like to have dual citizenship as I do live here and have worked her for decades but there’s no way I’ll give up my US passport to get TW citizenship and the. Reapply for a US Greencard, or anything as silly as that.
Yup if I was a US citizen I would not want to do that either. It’s a long run around and costs lots of money. Pity that Taiwan still requires renunciation but nothing will get that law changed anytime soon.
If you made the decision like I did back in the 1990’s that Taiwan was going to be your permanent place to live and die in then maybe renunciation would not be so bad. But if you later on may want to live in the USA again then no… APRC or JFRV it is.
Owning a language school in Taiwan in the past or being a school teacher in the USA until you recently retired would not qualify one for being one of the senior professionals in Taiwan.
As you have not been resident in Taiwan for many years you won’t qualify for the new programs as you are not working here. So you won’t meet the criteria for getting citizenship here without renunciation.
No. Your bog standard English teacher is not a high level professional.
If you read the wording the employment has to be at tertiary level institution or research institution ( Academia Sinica ) not Jnr Snr high school level.
Even people who work at universities have been refused.
The educational category includes foreigners who are employed at a Taiwanese academic institution with a rank of assistant professor or above and those who have published in internationally renowned academic journals.
Welcome to the rank of a mere pleb. You are now classed as an invalid.
Of course I was destined to have been an elite I was told. I had everything I needed to become one except the desire to do so.
It’s mere mortal status for me the lower ranked underclass. Some will say Taiwan has citizenship discrimination down to a science. Can’t wait for @Mataiou to Naturalize then challenge the renunciation requirement. A novel approach for sure.
