Are Michael Turton’s thoughts important?

You can decide for yourself. It does seem he has done some research and thinking in this latest column, mostly to show that . . . the current approach has not worked in Taiwan or really anywhere in the world.

Who says they’re not?

Because there isn’t one!

Taiwan’s current approach is the subsidy handout method.

Turton likens it to a form of vote buying, with he contends no evidence it addresses population decline, not just in Taiwan but anywhere.

Maybe Taiwan should get rid of birth control and abortion :face_with_peeking_eye:

I can’t take him seriously after this: 1 0H 1: The shock jock of Taiwan politics - Taipei Times

Hey it’s a free world, or at least a free internet. Read what you like and leave the rest. :person_shrugging:

Its basically nothing though. Unless its a significant sum of money how is that going to make a difference to people who want kids but cannot afford?

No research nessasary on that one, its a nothing burger.

Immigration is the easier ā€˜solution’ for most governments. Im not a fan but if i was in charge of fixing that i would start up a vietnamese wife import program. Vietnamese wives for all! Job done.

Didn’t they have Vietnamese brides for a while, until word got back to Vietnam what the situation was like for the brides, many of whom divorced their husbands at the first opportunity?

Yea it is rather weird the way they are treated. Not allowed to teach their kids Vietnamese etc. Have to adopt han dominance. Or maybe they should aim at the younger generation who won’t be so backwards.

Young Vietnamese girls are ready and willing to pop babies out at like 20 yrs old. I’ve got one of my old classmates on insta, all she does it post about babies and getting married. Shes early 20s. Got quite a ā€˜fertile’ physique too.

There’s nothing wrong with immigration. US and Australia, among others, are immigrant nations. Taiwan itself is an immigrant nation by some measures. What matters is who and how they get here, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with giving citizenship to hardworking, law abiding residents. I said it before, I think they can keep the 5 years citizenship requirement but ask for another 5 in case the resident in question wants to get citizenship without renouncing. 10 years is a long time to weed out the bad apples.

Edit: we also don’t have lax refugee policies. That there already solves most of the problem we see in Western countries imo

Its a short term solution only. And it comes with its own share of problems.

So ultimately, its better to focus on a long term solution. Moot points anyway, Taiwan will do neither!

There are still hundreds of Vietnamese marriage migrants coming to Taiwan each month.

The big change though was back in 2012 or so when it became illegal to run for-profit international marriage brokering businesses. The number of Taiwanese men marrying SE Asian women dropped sharply after that.

It is also true that better economic conditions in Vietnam and elsewhere have made Taiwan somewhat less attractive.

But the prohibition on for-profit marriage brokering was the key.

On the bright side, those haunted houses should have a discount

Well in Japan a house is for the most part cheap, and ones loner elders live in even cheaper/ Might be good retirement house.

Sorry, i meant looking forward to the haunted houses in Taiwan

Do japanese have the same superstition about buying a house someone died in?

Maybe some people do, but not me but might not like a house if the death was say a odd death.
But like in news link, if an elder died at home it would not bother me. (I would think most people die at home so should not an issue? but not sure about that)
