Taiwan versus South Korea (infrastructure in general, green areas, etc.)

If this map was including new taipei (Which it should, thats the real size of taipei) then they would be pretty even. seoul has a decently bigger population though.

Taipei: lots of wild street dogs on bike paths along the river and in the hills.
Seoul: zero street dogs as they’ve been BBQ’d.

While free speech is absolute, porn isn’t very good for society. Surely you have other things to nitpick about.

They don’t want porn, just like Taiwan doesn’t like weed.

That is highly debatable. Check out which countries ban it, which ones don’t:

I didn’t say banning porn is good for society. I said porn isn’t good for society.

I’m not doing this “guilt by association,” “all good things go together” thing.

Many U.S. states, for example, have declared it a public health crisis.

And both are cleaner than big cities in Europe.

I didn’t say that either. I’m assuming the countries that ban it ban it because they think it isn’t good for society. A public health crisis is not good for society. I’m not sure what the disagreement is here.

I’m not defending porn and it can be harmful for obvious reasons. I’m just pointing out that the countries that have the strictest limits on porn are by and large not the ones with freer societies.

Korea’s porn ban seems strange. They’re not a particularly austere or repressive society when it comes to sex or anything like that. I wonder why they do it.

Yeah my bad, I meant population wise.

When my grandfather from my mothers side from Korea came to visit us when I was a kid in Taiwan in the 90s. He was surprised by all the street dogs. He asked why we didn’t just catch them and eat them to solve the problem of them running around.

There’s a fine line between democracy and majoritarianism.

My personal consumption of the leaf and the fine art of the sexy are not in direct violation of others’ rights. If the other people do not want to partake in these activities, a liberal society would allow them the choice.

Why not ban all vices? What’s the point of society if I can’t do anything fun because a few things aren’t healthy?

I don’t know but it’s often religious people who make laws like this.

If they have absolute say, anything fun would be illegal.

Korea is the most overrated country in the world. Any society where:

is not a successful society. It’s the equivalent of cleaning up well for parties while doing lines of coke in the bathroom. All they care about is the image.

Oh and Korea’s GDP per capita in 2021 is barely 2000 more than Taiwan. Even that gap has been closed.

Taiwan has more USD billionaire than Korea does. Just sayin’

Taipei also has like the same number of multi-millionaires as Seoul despite a much, much smaller population.

Taiwan doesn’t have proper tourism infrastructure in general. Hotels are absolutely dumps in prime tourist locations or extremely overpriced with bad RoI. There are hardly any good decent 3-star hotels.

Just visit hot springs in Beitou. Absolute dumps constructed 60 years ago.

Goto Tainan hualien Yilan. Either you pay >$5000 a night for a decent hotel or get a dump.

Believe it or not it used to be WAY worse.
I remember before the Chinese tourists came you couldn’t find a newish hotel of any description in most places. They were smelly, smoky, old, sometimes doubling as love hotels. At least when they invested for the Chinese they built lots of cheap hotels in touristy areas. And aparthotels like you find in Taoyuan city.
At least Taiwan’s motels can be fun if you are into that.

I think there are several contenders but I gave you a like for putting all those links together. Proper post :+1:

Korea’s biggest newspaper recently announced that Taiwan is almost caught up with Korea economically.

Korea is a good competitor for Taiwan in technological supremacy and sports, and is a good basis for comparison.

To be honest, what they and Japan say about Taiwan matter the most.

And I’ll never forget this moment:

Taiwan seems very live and let live regarding gay people. Unless you are their son they generally don’t care.

I don’t like talking about my gayness. All I can say is that when the society around you is tolerant, parents’ judgment wouldn’t matter as much.
