Taiwan Weather 2026

Snow for mountains over 1500m? That’s like most mid-level mountains in Taiwan. Yangmingahan in Taipei, Ogongji in Hsinchu, not to mention all the actually tall moumtains. So we’ll wake up to snow covering most mountains tomorrow?

Have the Great Taipei Eternal Rains of 2026 finally ended? May I finally open my door after being inside since last year?

Well historically we haven’t reached February.

In February 2022, Taipei saw one of its most famously sunlight-deprived stretches in decades.

15 Days of Zero Sunshine: Between late January and mid-February 2022, the Taipei Weather Station recorded 15 consecutive days where the total sunshine duration was 0.0 hours.

During the first 24 days of February 2022, Taipei only saw roughly 6 total hours of sunshine. For context, the city averaged nearly 20 rainy days that month, the highest frequency of February rain in over a decade.

Some areas of Northern Taiwan (including Keelung and parts of Taipei) recorded rain for 42 out of 43 days between January and February.

In a typical winter, Taipei averages about 13–15 rainy days per month, but the combination of the Northeast Monsoon and stationary fronts can occasionally trap the city in a “cloud lid” for 2–3 weeks straight without a single break of blue sky.

Rain? What’s that?

Some serious moonlight tonight! If he were still with us, David Bowie would be impressed.

Wasn’t 2022 one of those lunar years where you got an extra lunar month (hence the late mid autumn in 2021) which results in a delayed winter?

According to chatGPT since I’m not a gynecologist.

“Actually, you’ve got a couple of the years and their effects slightly swapped!

The “extra month” (leap month) you’re thinking of didn’t happen in 2022. It actually happened in 2023, which caused a “double spring” year. However, your observation about the timing of the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2021 is spot on—it was relatively “late” (September 21), which often makes the following winter feel like it’s arriving later in the calendar year.”

Gynecologist?

Must be autocorrupt.

You sure about that?

I remember there was one year, must be 2020 or 2021 where mid autumn was 1st of October and winter arrived very late that year too. This past year it was even later than that, so as usual we got a late winter.

I think you’re mixing up feet with meters.

Taipei mountains are only about 1000m

Yes, but it’s also farther north, and has gotten snow in the past despite being not as tall as other Xiaobaiyue.

I’ve only seen snow in Taipei mountains once. It was 4 or 5 degrees colder than what we’re getting so far this season.

When it happens it’s quite a beautiful view from Taipei on a clear day
