I think Hou is a decent domestic leader but he isn’t international at all and can’t be a statesman. Taiwan has a very difficult international situation and has to balance a difficult relationship with Washington, partner countries and hopefully some kind of dialogue with Beijing. Hou clearly isn’t up to this
But to be honest, neither is Lai really and also Ko possibly
You are ignoring the time when Hou’s New Taipei City administration mishandled the first COVID child death case, where a 2 year old suffering from severe fever couldn’t get an ambulance for 81 minutes. The parents asked for transcripts of their calls to 1922 and New Taipei’s emergency operators, as well as transcripts between 1922 and New Taipei, but he was only able to get the ones from 1922.
It wasn’t until someone from the emergency services leaked the transcript to the press that it was revealed New Taipei emergency services failed to send ambulance citing unable to contact local Health Bureau as the reason, despite it being an emergency. Prior to the leak, the New Taipei City government tried to stall the release of the transcripts. After the leak it started cracking down on employees who leaked the info, despite the Executive Yuan demanded the transcripts be released.
The parents seem unable to forgive the response from Hou’s city government.
Hou was also the one who ordered to storm the magazine office of freedom fighter, and Taiwan independence advocate Cheng Nan-jung, forcing him to choose self-immolation as the final mean to evade capture. When asked why he ordered to storm the office instead of trying to negotiate for Cheng’s surrender, Hou simply replied that he was following orders, and he would have done so again today. The issue here is of course that Cheng was practicing rights that should have been protected by the ROC government’s own constitution. So insisting he did nothing wrong by following orders, he violated the constitution to suppress the freedom of speech, which Hou is perfectly fine with even today.
Famous political pundit Zhu Xueheng who has been coaching KMT’s youth and internet divisions since 2010 is now also being accused of kissing KMT Taipei City councilor Zhong Peijun by force after a dinner meeting. He waited until the other couple they were havng dinner with left before forcing himself on Zhong, when she resisted Zhu said you won’t remember this tomorrow anyway.
It seems like they tried to resolve the issue privately, but Zhu refused to put the fact that he forced himself on her and kissed her against her will on paper. When Zhong saw Zhu criticizing others for sexual harassment on TV, she felt like she has to expose him.
hahaha I know that guy. Thats quite funny. Obviously sexual harassment isnt funny, but funny he is caught up in this scandal. Considering he is one of the number one anti-DPP big mouth internet celebrities, funny if he gets brought down by this.
He is obviously a bit of a dickhead, but he isnt a politician. Would be like Tucker Carlson or someone being caught up in a sex scandal
This data is from ET Today which im gathering is one the more reliable of the polls from blue media.
Taiwan polling is weird. You can just disregard any polls from the deep green or deep blue media as they probably have decided the results before they started(Blue or Green candidate always winning by a lot). I don’t really get the point and why someone wants to see something that they must know is false, but confirms the reality they wish was true. I don’t really get this type of Taiwan political theatre
I completely agree—and as a result I’ve quite missed Nathan Batto’s parsing of poll results. I hope he starts posting again as the election approaches.
Been watching some shows and Hou is not connecting with KMT traditional base, which is an issue. He doesnt really have any strong relationships with the KMT famous players and he isnt connecting enough with the deep blues
Huge outrage happening about the drugging of kindergarten kids in Banqiao. A long delay in the government’s response, followed by a ludicrously low fine for this outrageous behavior. . .
This is all in Hou You-yi’s domain: gangsters shooting storefronts in the open, kindergartens drugging kids . . . so much for the law-and-order persona he projects. No discerable vision or policy direction, and evidently no law-and-order either. Can someone remind me again about what he is bringing to the table as a candidate?
The steps before the apology—notably, the Xinbei government’s shrug-of-the-shoulders indifference to very serious allegations—continue to garner criticism, including in this scathing op-ed translated into English and published in today’s Taipei Times:
I particularly like this one: At a press conference at the legislature, Taiwan Women’s Link (TWL) secretary-general Tsai Wan-fen (蔡宛芬) said the groups did not rule out launching a campaign to call on female DPP members to quit the party should Koo be elected chairman.
Tsai Wan-fen said Koo’s repetition of discriminatory comments had harmed the DPP’s image, adding that the DPP should change its name to “Democratic Regressive Party. ” Koo apologizes for offensive remarks - Taipei Times
