Taiwan's love for the Land of the Rising Sun

As for the Honkies - I still believe tha HKG’ers believe they are the best Chinese in the world - I think they see the Chinese world as: Taiwanese are a bunch of rich bumpkins, the Chinese are a bunch or poor (but now getting richer) bumpkins, the Overseas Chinese are a bunch of sell-outs and the Singaporeans and Straights Chinese aren’t really Chinese anymore, but I digress…
Good post. :bravo:

Allegiance is the wrong word. It is much more about heritage. Let me point out that if your “racial” background is obvious on sight in America, it may make a difference. Ultimately the “Chinese way of thinking” is dependent on many factors and isn’t monolithic or unchanging.

Apologies - it should read “Greater China”. The thinking by the “Greater China” crowd is quite monolithic and very race based.

I don’t see that in Taiwan, HKG, Singapore & China, unless you look very stereotypically one of these groups, that your looks would be,
obvious on sight
. So I think the analogy still stands.

It must really be galling to Chinese that Taiwanese would rather be Japanese, American, Australian, Canadian…anything other than Chinese.

I don’t see many Americans Otakus…
“Otaku”? Don’t worry ac, we otakus have lots of slang for you guys too. And you’ll like it alot less.
Otakus are “geeks, nerds, homebodies” in Japanese. It refers to the American fan of Japanese pop culture, especially Japanese published animated shows, RPG games, and comic books.

I hope that you are not identifying with a group you might not normally associate with.

No more galling than foriegners going to Asia trying to Chinese, Japanese, Korean or anything else other than foreign.

I just here for the big money and hot women.

Jumpy aren’t you? He means that Chinese people means a generalization of various different sub groups such as the Han. Hence there isn’t a real Chinese ethnicity.

Plus just because a mass number of people believe something doesn’t mean its true. (world is flat, etc). A large majority of the world thinks that you look as Japanese as the next Japanese guy. Does that make you Japanese?

As he said, there really isn’t a Chinese identity just as there isn’t a real European identity. The “Chinese people” are actually made up of Manchurians, Shanghainese, Hainanese, Cantonese, Yunnanese and groups like that. The only reason a Chinese identity exists is due to the common Hanzi script and their Asian ethnicity much like the Europeans with their caucasian ethnicity and Latin alphabet.

It is sad that many people are ignorant of this truth and this is why the believe Taiwanese self-determination is BS, when its actually quite far from their “truth”
