I did that too, but I don’t expect much from it. Might need though this to document attempts to fixing with the ombudsman.
From what I’ve heard they are just completely reactionary. So they are happy with the status quo until something blows up, then it’s a witchhunt. The case in point there was the Covid insurance blow-up.
Maybe at some point a foreign tax office is going to complain the data we are feeding them under the terms of this agreement is junk?
also wrote to the “whistleblower” email of CTBC to highlight this wrongful behaviour.
Just to clarify, you did this for the same issue we’re currently discussing, is that right?
I’m also still discussing it with CTBC, so would be cool if there’s more than one of us!
yes, exactly on the very same thing, and the FSC complaint is both for HSBC and CTBC (attached to them both statements)
Can you share the HSBC whiskey glass they will inevitably send once they capitulate since you already have one?
write to the media about banking institutions committing tax fraud and defrauding the people of Taiwan. make sure you dot your I s and cross your T s so you dont get sued. but if they are committing fraud, I see 2 ways forward: power in numbers (probably not enough foreigners who care or are too scared) or public embarrassment (aka, the tv).
This is (partly) why I’m leaving. My limit of bullsh*t was reached. Not just banking. Employers, household registration, landlord, NIA, phone companies. All bullshitters that can’t do their jobs and lie.
And then somethings are just too hard (compared to Australia) like opening a business, merchant services, even Skype doesn’t work properly. I could open a sole trading business registered for GST and payroll with an online accounting system that automatically reconciles my bank account and invoices in 10 minutes in Australia. A day or 2 to have merchant services set up. This would easily be weeks - months in Taiwan and some things not possible.
Judging by that response they think all ARC holders are homeless. ‘It’s judged by having a place to live’ so homeless Taiwanese mustn’t be tax residents either. Ducking idiots.
The definition of residency according to the tax bureau has 0 to do with an ARC or Taiwan ID. You can be a tax resident without either. M*rons.
I can understand a stupid staff member here and there. How can a whole industry have 0 idea of the law regulating their industry. It’s bloody ridiculous. Even shoving the law in their face does nothing.
Trying to build a prosperous life here is just too hard.
You know if Australia treated the tens of thousands of Taiwanese working in Australia this way there’d be an uproar.
Lost of public face might not work, I still work in the industry… Cannot shit where I sleep/eat…
For the moment I won’t publicly ashame them, need still to do a few things for my own situtation, then will think about it.
Why the hell not. Sometimes this will garner you respect as you become seen as the authority that that know what he’s doing and talking about.
Sometimes this is the only way for positive change.
All in good time mate, all in good time.
Well, the foreigner friendly bank Richart just sent me 2 tax withholding statements, all wrong, one for Jan 23 and one for Feb 23… Ofc it shows I stayed for less than 183 days for the reporting period, I find it challenging to be in Taiwan for 183 days in one month…
Incompetence, gross incompetence
just wrote a complaint to them and yet another to FSC. It is exhausting…
We shall gather all of our complaints and make one long article in Chinese and English explaining how the FSC and the banks have missed the mark
This I can agree to
I’ve found doing business in Taiwan for the last 23 years very easy. If there’s a problem my wife just calls somebody up and yells at them and – boom! – fixed. Don’t ask me how she does it though.
So you’re content just to be the helpless foreigner who needs a local minder?
My husband gets sucked into the rubbish they spew out instead of standing his ground and yelling at them.
I blame his mother ![]()
Beefing people on Twitter seems to have some effect these days. Not sure who you would go at for this though.
