Tattoo artist - work permit?

This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but - was wondering if anyone knows anything or has any ideas of how to attain a working visa as a tattoo artist in Taiwan, or if you could point me in the right direction?

Basically, me and my boyfriend are looking into moving over as he has got a job offer and I’d like to continue working as a tattoo artist in Taiwan. I’ve been tattooing since 2015, specialising in blackwork/dotwork and I’ve also got experience as an illustrator and graphic designer.

We’ve both been living in Taiwan before and enjoyed it, but I was studying at the time. This time we’re in for the longer run and are hoping to spend a few years in Taiwan, but this isn’t possible unless I can work legally as well.

Got work experience and a bachelors in Chinese. Our second option would be going to HK, but we’d prefer Taiwan as we’ve already got friends and a network there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Depending on your nationality, you may qualify for a working holiday visa for up to one year.

If your partner is Taiwanese, have you considered getting married?

Other than that, your best bet is to talk to @Toe_Save.

Hi Needles,

You could try to make a case for yourself if this Bill passes. Conversely, an existing studio may be able to “hire”/sponsor you as a special talent.

It would be an extreme longshot for me to try sponsoring her. We’d have to claim that her work is a performance. Sorry, don’t see my partners thinking that far outside the box. Too bad. I’d love me some free ink. :dolphin:

Of course, the legitimate path would be to start you own business. Talk to Vincent @ jusregal for a free consultation.

Unfortunately, my home country doesn’t make me qualified, otherwise I would have gone for that working holiday visa. We’re both European and aren’t planning on getting married anytime soon anyway. Thank you though.

I’ll tattoo on stage if I have to! Haha!
I doubt that bill will be passed in time, Taiwanese bureaucracy isn’t the speediest one. But one can hope. I’ll try and reach out to Vincent then, my own business would be quite ideal, but it seems expensive, considering the sum of money I’ve seen quoted as a requirement for starting your business (a sum that I don’t have lying around unfortunately)?
I’ll see if there are any studios willing to help sponsor me.

Thank you for your help!

hi there!
am in the same situation now and am wondering if anyone knows if the laws have changed??? does this mean that i will not be able to get a work permit as a tattoo artist in taiwan unless a company with a high annual income is able to hire me? :sob:

As far as I know, the laws have not changed.

Edit: the bill passed, but unless you have internationally recognized as a tattoo artist, you could not qualify for gold card.

This thread may help to know the current situation.

thank you for replying!

oh no, seems like it’s almost impossible then, right…? because i am graduating from a university in taiwan in 2 months and am actually pretty interested in the tattoo industry but the work permit thing is really giving me a headache. my boyfriend owns a tattoo studio though, but doesn’t earn the minimal amount to hire a foreigner… and i haven’t even started learning, let alone be internationally recognised :joy:
