Teaching job advice for PhD holder in Maths

If you have a PhD, what are you doing at an elementary school? Go work for one of the big unis, or at least an international school.

I would if they were hiring and responding to my emails.

Emails generally don’t work in Taiwan.

How should I apply then?

I got my uni job by walking into the English language center.

What’s your PhD in, out of interest?

Mathematics. How do I know they’re even recruiting?

Post grad degrees need to be in Education, Applied Linguistics, or English Literature to teach English in unis.

Private ā€˜international’ schools are a better bet for you. I just had a quick glance at Tealit and I saw a couple who say they are recruiting (doesn’t mean they actually are, of course).

Thanks, I’ve probably already applied. I also saw Kangchiao in Qingshan is looking for a language arts teacher, so I’ll try there too.

Universities usually post recruitment for new instructors on their own personal website, not job forums. Despite the exaggerated reports of their deaths, there’s still unis hiring year round.

Anyway, I only have a lowly Master’s and would never subject myself to elementary school drudgery. With a PhD? Forget it. That’s a waste of a degree if I’ve ever seen it.

Ok, but I’ve looked, I can’t find these mythical jobs.

They’re not ā€œmythicalā€, and you’re not looking in the right places. Like I said, look at the university websites or just call the unis directly. This isn’t hard.

I am looking on their websites. I’m looking at every website for every university in Taipei. None of them have any web page for jobs and careers.

Do you have a Taiwanese friend who can help you navigate the sites? Last year when I was job hunting for a new uni, I saw several recruiting and even turned down one before landing my current position. If you don’t want to do that, then just call or visit the English departments in person.

I would say that you should show that you have the ability to at least hold down a job and have some good references before they would consider hiring you.

In Australia companies are very careful hiring PHD graduates with little experience or no references. In Taiwan it might be different?

I worked at my last school for 2 years but left because I wanted to move to Taipei. They said they give me good references.

Yes, my Taiwanese gf is trying to help me. Her university is looking for an English teacher, but that’s a Taiwanese English teacher, not a native, and the pay is low, 500 to 800 an hour.

Your PhD is in Mathematics. Teaching English in unis is not the right avenue for you.

so what is the right avenue?

I’d be trying to get a position at a technical university… but probably in the west, not in Taiwan.

Still, if he applies at a lower-tier private uni here they won’t care as much as a public one.

What sort of jobs do you recommend here then, and which unis specifically ?
