Word is that the “essays” on EOs are being evaluated by AI anyway. And I think they may be “optional” in some way, but we all know what that means.
The big issue with federal service right now is the evaluation system. Trump et al have decreed that essentially no one should be rated higher than a 3 (“fully successful”), so very few 4s (“More than fully successful”) or 5s (“outstanding”). This is a really big change from the past. I’m not passing judgement on whether the grades in the past were inflated or whatever – I can’t think of anywhere where someone thinks it’s good to be “fully successful” if there are higher ratings available – but the issue is that future hiring officials won’t necessarily know where the supervisor’s mind was on that, and the ratings aren’t consistent across the government now (less than before, for sure) because of the change and because all the supervisors are worried they’ll be flagged if they give their direct reports good ratings.
There is also a cash performance award linked to the ratings, so it’s personal to most people, especially since the 2026 salary scale gives only a 1% increase, not even the rate of inflation.
Sure, that’s good, but it’s hardly negating any of my other issues with the entire admin that far outweigh the status of marijuana. So does it tip the scales, sure. But shitty policy + marijuana is still shitty policy?
