I’ve abandoned the scheme, wanted to switch to a different phone number and at the service desk they asked for my ARC. Too suspicious, WTF they need that for? Don’t trust it
Because they use id number as a means to identify people, and if you’re not a citizen they base it on your arc number.
Is only a customer card ffs, an email plus phone number should be plenty for that purpose. After all, the gov regulations are so uptight and restrictive about phone numbers already, that’s quite enough form of ID IMO
I don’t know, companies in Taiwan act like this. The whole system isn’t designed with foreigners in mind.
I think companies do this because there are once per individual stuff (such as getting refund for your Costco membership, you’re only allowed to do this once and if you do it a second time you’re banned from Costco).
Also it’s quite easy to change your phone number or email address so it’s not an acceptable way to identify someone.
So I went yesterday, and found the entire building torn down. Nothing was left standing on that lot. There goes my hope for a slightly larger Carrefour where I can at least push a cart around while browsing without bumping into 50 people.
I got this same feeling when I went to my regular large Carrefour in Taipei last week. Imported items I normally can usually find were depleted, limited selection of bakery products and prepared food. Don’t know of something’s up or not but funny feeling about it.
I am getting a feeling carrefour, at least the hypermarket, is probably pulling out of at least drastically downsizing.
Many hypermarkets feels empty, and the former welcome aren’t much better. Px mart has way more people.

I assume this means they will also stop licensing products from actual Carrefour.
The French are out. Maybe the Germans can give it a go.

I foresee loss of egg mayo and things like that. I hope there are not dark days to come but the write up with all its ‘local market needs’ shite is not promising.
The carrefour branded products look to be somewhat locally produced, garlic peanuts, seaweed sheets, dumpling, etc. Maybe not the coffee or jarred goods?
I’m worried about the disappearance of industrial cheeses and other imported things like Carrefour olives, Lydia’s Pickles, Emborg, President, etc

The group has responded to years of changes in Taiwan’s retail market, while the management philosophies and styles of France’s Carrefour and Uni-President differ.
I’m kind of reading that as the new-and-not-improved version of Carrefour deciding they don’t need to bother stocking imported western products or listening to requests from customers to bring back popular items (I’ve never made such a request, but I vaguely remember others saying Carrefour was pretty good in dealing with them).
It is if it’s pretty much all they sell 
(at least my local store). sliced edam, emmental, gouda, I’ll add to sandwiches and pizza.
Thanks, I’ll check it out. I did see some new cheeses that I think were cheddar recently. I’ve mostly given up on the always stale tasting President english cheddar.

Here’s an anecdote from this morning, before I saw this thread. I zipped over to my local Carrefour to pick up a few things on a Sunday morning and spotted some marmalade from Japan. That looks nice, I thought, and brought it to the cashier to pay. It would not compute, they could not figure out how to sell it, how to take my money for a product I wanted that was stocked on their shelf. Some kind of manager type appeared: burly guy, speaking Taiwanese, large gold chains around his neck, looked like a gangster type, never seen anyone like that working in my local Carrefour before. So this is what the Uni-President take over looks like, I thought. Bloody hell I’ve lost my local Carrefour.
