Four-twenty is the California police code for marijuana possession. In honor of this code, people tend to smoke at 4:20 am and (for the ambitious)/or pm with April 20th (4/20) being International “Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em” Day. I forget the real name, but that one suits me just fine.

O.K. so that was little blunt toe save. Sorry. Actually though I was responding (in haste) more to richardm. A lot of people who abuse drugs argue that they aren’t hurting anybody else. Ya well ya know what? A lot of them are hurting lots of other people only they don’t realize it till they quit. I am not saying that you are, or that richard is, but there is a good possibility. I feel for the man in the park walking his dog who found the girl having siezures behind the park bench, blood coming from her eyes and ears, after all her loyal drug dealing friends ran away. I feel for the paramedics who had to try to save her life in the back of a screaming ambulance.
I feel for myself, the man who had to break the news to her father and sister.
Her dinner was on the table, ready for her to eat when she got home.
The sight of her mother, holding back the tears as she identified her own daughters body, purple and swollen, on the coroners table is a sight I will never forget.
You helped kill her. You are directly responsible.
YOU are the source of this demand. You are asking for drugs to be grown, sold, trafficked, tainted, bought, used.
YOU supply guns, crowbars, screwdrivers, knives, baseball bats, stolen cars, turf wars, backhanders, fraud, danger, injury and death to the streets of the world.
And in particular, your own street.
You give money to the dealers. Would you give money to your local fundamentalist terrorist group? The IRA perhaps? How about a mafia organisation?

I wont say anything if I see you using cannabis. It wont affect my opinion of you either way if you use the stuff or not. I don’t really give a shit. canabis should be legalised from my point of view. But don’t you dare tell me it is none of my business.

Around ten years ago heroin and cocaine starting becoming much more common on the streets of a lot of Canada’s big cities. One of the theories I heard to explain this is that dealers in the states were having a hard time paying for our weed so traded us cocaine and heroin for it. Who knows if this is really true but I don’t have a hard time believing that it is at least partly true.
It is also true that a lot of independant operators run small hydroponics labs in their basements. They know what they are doing. They don’t use too many fertilizers or any pesticides and they sell to adults.

Here’s a thought, dangermouse. If drugs were legal, most of those problems you went on about would be resolved or at least reduced to a great extent. Government-regulated drugs are less likely to be tainted the way ones bought off the street illegally are. Criminals would lose money because people would be more likely to buy legal drugs than illegal ones and, if the government would for once be smart instead of greedy, they could undercut dealers so that there would an even further incentive against buying from dealers: price. By regulating it, they could make a profit off of it. Granted not the same profit as what they get in confiscating money and fines and legal fees, but it would at least be going directly into their pockets. They could charge a sin tax on it like they do with tobacco products. They could slap a legal age on it be it 16, 18, or 21 to keep it out of the hands of children. They could control the farms on which it’s grown. They could put a surgeon general’s warning on it for what ever they think it does to people. They could even come up with a catchy abbreviation just for driving while high…hey, I know: DWH. They could say, “Fuck William Randolph Hearst and his descendants. Hemp is a much better product than wood fiber and cotton.” and make money on that as it’s less taxing on soil than cotton and tobacco and regrows quickly unlike tree forests. They can even have Joe Platypus as the spokesmascot…it’s cute, it’s a mammal, it has a phallic-shaped nose, and it’s even funnier when on the other side of a lit fattie.
But oh, no. The tobacco industry, the paper industry, the lumber industry, the pharmeceutical industry, and every other industry that stands a chance to lose their tight grip on the government’s balls will make sure that drugs are kept illegal, that murderers can keep jacking up prices and mix in poisons to make 3 oz feel like 7 oz, that people will keep stealing to fuel their habits, that kids will sneak around their parents backs and keep secrets from them…okay, nothing will stop that from happening …, that tax dollars are wasted on useless, ineffective war on drugs programs, that police forces will be strained because they are chasing after thousands of people smoking pot and crack rather than the few people who are actually running the drug rings and taking care of all the crimes related to these drug rings, that prisons will be overcrowded with drug misdemeanors while rapists, murderers, and child molesters get only a few months in jail and serve the rest of their time in the community to make room for more potheads…

Wow, and to think I was about to just post something to the effect of:
“OMG ALL CRIME COMES FROM DRUGS!!!” and basically just say that’s arse. A fairly substantial amount probably does, but to say ALL does is just insane.
And then there’s the fact that if you grow your own, like most smokers I knew back home did - or their friend grew some in the closet or something and shared - then the dealer is entirely cut out of the equation making the rant utterly irrelevant.
I am all for having a look at the role you play in the bigger picture and then making changes if you don’t like what you see. I don’t see why weed should be any different. If you don’t like auto exhaust everywhere, don’t buy a car. If you don’t want to empower coke dealers, don’t buy downtown…
