"The Fu Bar" at Fulong Beach

Hi, some good mates (Etienne & Brigitte) just opened a bar & restaurant at Fulong beach.
My mate went for the opening (I had to stay in Taipei) and came back with great reports.

It’s near the temple end of the beach. I’m planning on going out Sunday so I’ll add more info when I’ve got it.

This is from their facebook page

“The Fu Bar serves light snacks, drinks and meat off the grill.
It has a relaxed atmosphere and is a great place to hang out with good friends.”

I fully back up what wasabipeanut3’s mate said to him. Just spent the last two days up in Fulong and more than the majority of that time at the Fu Bar. Excellent food was coming off the BBQ each evening not to mention the liquid refreshments coming from the fridge.

T’is about a minute walk from the beach and Etienne and Brigitte have a number of tables and massive umbrellas outside the restaurant for those of us who have to be cautious of our bright friend in the sky.

When this feckin’ football competition is over I’ll be back soon enough!

Slainte,

Niall.

Come on Niall and Ant. What is the friggin’ food? Real BBQ? Enough with the teasers!

Pictures or it didn’t happen

Hi,
I went to Fulong on Saturday. The Fu Bar is at the temple end of the beach and as you walk up the sand ramp to the car park it’s easy to see the Carlsberg umbrellas. It’s next to a small playground too.

They had a good menu. The pitas were about $130 and good. I had the lamb & feta and then a broerwurst sausage, chutney & cheddar cheese pita. Both really good.

A Taiwanese family were having meat platters, kebabs and stuff that smelled yummy.

The menu has cheap, mid range and more expensive choices. A decent selection. All South African BBQ staples.
Good choices to share with a bunch of friends or the pitas are great if it’s just 1 or 2 of ya.

Et (Etienne) also does pig on a spit if you give him 7 days notice.

My friends have buckets of beers and jug of sangria and seemed to enjoy that a lot

It was really nice to have a spot at the beach to relax and hang out. Often when I go to the beach ya stuck in the sun or at a small Taiwanese restaurant that is good but you can’t really spend much time at.

Et is sick this week (July 27 today) so if you’re going out perhaps next weekend.
It’s a new place and it’ll be good to see Et develop it as money flows in and he can do all the things he is planning.

It’s great to see a mate get his ideas up and running and i was really impressed and it really made Fulong beach much more fun.
All this is true BTW - not just a plug for a friend.

Cheers
Ants

Sounds like a great place for a “westerner” beach trip in Taiwan.
I do not posses any transportation, how to get there by train/bus?

You can take the train from Taipei to Fulong Station.

Looks nice, be nice to run a gig like that. Beach bar. We have one here, but it’s always empty for some reason.

The Fu Bar. Please, please, PLEASE tell me they have T-shirts for sale.

No T shirts, yet.

But, the foods are excellent. We tried some lamb, chicken, pork and sausage this weekend and it was all excellent. Really, very high quality, in my opinion.

Nice SA cider, also.

Savannah? (spelling) Good stuff!

Hi all,

Thanks for all the positive feedback.

Our menus are being printed (hopefully) this week, I will post up here once we have the translated version back.
We are currently only open on the weekends. I am there during the week and can open the kitchen if a group is coming in, just give us a ring first on 0955 496 175.
Our menu consists of toasted pitas and South African style braai (BBQ) fare. We also have platters on offer with a variety of the meats or pitas for those who are really hungry or who want to share.
On the drinks side we serve cocktails by the jug, beer, cider (Hunters, Savannah might be an option in the near future), wine and assorted soft drinks, juices and teas. No coffee yet, but coming soon.
We have been in the catering business for a while now, so we specialise in groups. We have a spit BBQ for roasting, so let us know how many people and we can do the whole hog so to speak.
We have parking available near the restaurant, so no problem driving down for an afternoon on the beach.
T-shirts will be available in the near future.

To get to us:
By bus or train -
From Fulong Station walk straight down over the main road.
At the YMCA, turn right. Cross the bridge, then turn left and follow the road.
The road becomes a path that runs along behind the beach.
…Follow the path to The Fu Bar.
By car -
Drive down the Coastal Highway 2 from Keelung to Ilan.
When you get into Fulong, go past the 711, and through 2 sets of traffic lights.
Pass the elementary school on the right.
Turn left and pass through under the prayer gate on the road down to Dong Xin temple.
100m further on, turn left. The Fu Bar is 10m further on the left, parking just past the restaurant.

Hope to see some more of you on the beach soon!

Visited there last weekend and was VERY positively surprised.

Nice small bar with outside seating and inside AC’d seating. I like what they made out of this pretty TWese small hole-in-the-wall like restaurant with some wood and art  Very easy to find if you are going to the temple nearby (where by the way you can rent surfboards from a guy in a black van, and umbrellas from the shops in the back of that plaza, also showers are there - I like this much better than the more western “original” fulong beach, also because you can swim here without some annoying lifeguard whistling at you all the time)

The main reason for me to come back and to highly recommend this place is the Boerewors. I didn’t know much about this kind of sausage before, only had one at Mr. Sausages kitchen before. While that one was surely good, the Boerewors at Fu Bar is simply delicious. Seems like I happen to love exactly those kinds of spices they use, which makes this sausage totally different from all other types that I tried before. And I tried a lot

No idea if this Boerewors is “Original” or not - for me it is simply GREAT! If you don’t know this kind of sausage, and generally like well-spiced foods, try it. It seems they also freeze and deliver them on order, which I will definitely try for my next barbecue at home.

They serve it with some kind of cornmeal-based stuff similar to polenta, plus a tomato / veggie sauce. Again, very flavorful due to lots of herbs and spices.

Another tip, especially if youw ant a alcohole free alternative to the great SA cider they serve, would be the peach ice tea: seems home made, very tasty - and most importantly it is not sweet.

Also the Pitas are good, filled with different kinds of meat and other stuff. We had the one filled with spicy chicken, cheese, pineapple and mint. Now that I think of it, I didn’t notice the mint (which is good because I don’t like mint much). Anyway, it was yummy as well. Maybe one piece would a be bit small if you are a good eater, though.

On Google Maps the place would be found here:

Have enjoyed several epic meals there over the past couple of weeks and can heartily recommend this place.

Good lamb chops and grits!! Worth the money we spent and were overwhelmed with Mare’ s’ hospitality. Even MJB didn’t complain!

Looking at the post from the guy down at Kaohsiung, I just hope you’ve got all your bases covered over there at Fulong. Cross them t’s and dot them i’s. Or make sure you have a get-out clause.

Stopped in yesterday and it was good! The three pita platter and the peach iced tea were great. Look forward to trying more the next time I head up your way. Cheers.

Hi all,

The menus should be done soon, am just waiting for the translations to be finished.

Thanks to all who have stopped in and introduced themselves over the past weeks!

A quick note:

September 18th will Mrs Grillmasters birthday, so our kitchen will be closed for the day. The bar will be open, and we will serve snacks throughout the day, so come and join us for the party if you are in the area!

We will also be closed on October 9th for a private function.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the beach!

I was up in Fulong today near the temple at the far end of the beach.
It isn’t adjacent to the paying area of the beach (the temple that is).

Is this place near there?
If so I couldn’t see it. I saw a round garlsberg sign outside somewhere but didn’t notice a name of a place as I drove round.

I assume it was the place?

I also assume it is only open at weekends too?

A photo of the place would be nice. May I also suggest some English ads at the station or around there.

Nope, it’s adjacent to the non-paying surfer area, near the temple. Just next to the small children’s playground. See the google map that I posted above…

But i agree, some signs in the area where most people go might be nice… amybe advertising… if you want tons of Taiwanese to come and enjoy those Borewors
