The GOP's House of Representatives Thread

YOu must be apoplectic that Russian yachts were seized because Ukraine.

That’s not civil asset forfeiture. This is civil asset forfeiture:

People have lost their homes or vehicles after a third party misused the property without the owner’s knowledge.8 ×8. See Stillman, supra note 1. For example, Mary and Leon Adams resided in their West Philadelphia house for forty-six years when the police told them to vacate and initiated a civil forfeiture proceeding against the property because their adult son sold $60 worth of marijuana on the porch.9 ×9. See id. Tina Bennis faced a similar fate when the Supreme Court upheld the civil forfeiture of the car she jointly owned with her husband after he secretly had sex with a prostitute inside the vehicle.10 ×10. See Bennis v. Michigan, 516 U.S. 442, 443–44 (1996). The police also use minor traffic stops to seize cash or cars without so much as issuing a ticket.11 ×11. See Stillman, supra note 1. Victor Ramos Guzman experienced this when he was pulled over for speeding and a state trooper seized $28,500; he was a church secretary en route to buy land for the church with the donated money and possessed no contraband.12 ×

They should sue their son.

They shouldn’t have to if the U.S. Constitution meant anything any longer:

“ A Due Process Clause is found in both the Fifth and FourteenthAmendments to the United States Constitution, which prohibit the deprivation of “life, liberty, or property” by the federal and state governments, respectively, without due process of law.[1][2][3]

The U.S. Supreme Court interprets these clauses broadly, concluding that they provide three protections: procedural due process (in civil and criminal proceedings); substantive due process, a prohibition against vague laws; and as the vehicle for the incorporation of the Bill of Rights.”

And what does that mean to you?

This is a senate thing that might make it through the House with bipartisan support. Easy win for Biden as well. Even trump wouldn’t complain.

Not sure about that… he and his admin were all about the power of the (Republican) presidency as being ‘total.’

Hypocrites but in a smart way.

They didn’t vote for it, they don’t like it and they’re working to undermine it — but Republicans are reaping the benefits of Democrats’ climate law.

In the five months since the Inflation Reduction Act became law, companies have announced tens of billions of dollars in renewable energy, battery and electric vehicle projects that will benefit from incentives in President Joe Biden’s signature law, aimed at expanding domestic manufacturing in clean energy and reducing dependence on Chinese imports.

In fact, roughly two-thirds of the major projects are in districts whose Republican lawmakers opposed the Inflation Reduction Act, according to a POLITICO analysis of major green energy manufacturing announcements made since the bill’s enactment.

Ogles looking like a half assed Santos.

GOP Rep. Marjorie Geene had this to say:

“Listen to this mother, who lost two children to fentanyl poisoning, tell the truth about both of her son’s murders because of the Biden administrations [sic] refusal to secure our border and stop the Cartel’s [sic] from murdering Americans everyday [sic] by Chinese fentanyl.”
But while Greene saw Kiessling’s tragic story as proof of the Biden administration’s policies, there was a fairly obvious problem with this attempt at blame: Kiessling’s sons died in 2020
(Rochester Hills mother testifies about 2 sons' fentanyl overdose deaths), when Biden was a private citizen.

The fentanyl was imported into the United States and the two kids died of an overdose when Donald Trump was president, though I am sure some of our right-wingers here can explain how it was all Biden’s fault.

And while I don’t imagine anyone was especially surprised to see that the right-wing Georgian hadn’t done her homework, it was part of a curious recent pattern in GOP politics: Republicans keep forgetting who was president in 2020.

Rep. Ronny Jackson of Texas, for example, recently blamed Biden for “paying people to stay home” in 2020, referring to a law that Donald Trump signed the year before Biden took office.

The same week, Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado blamed the Democratic president for Covid-related school closures in 2020 — which, again, was a year that Biden spent on the campaign trail, not in the Oval Office.

And don’t forget that Obama was esponsible for the troop withdrawal treaty in Iraq that Bush signed in 2008, and also for the 2008 recession that began under Bush.

It was the fault of anyone who supports open borders.

Imported? Like bananas?

Call me old-fashioned, but I feel slightly uneasy about a woman who is prepared to lie about the deaths of her two sons for political gain.

jdsmith-
“Import”- since you seem to be unfamiliar with the term, here are some dictionary definitions:

bring (goods or services) into a country from abroad for sale. v

a commodity, article, or service brought in from abroad for sale. n

Did somebody bring the fentanyl into the US from abroad for sale? Yes, they did.
Was the fentanyl a good brought into the US for sale? Yes, it was.
Seems to fit both definitions.

Given that it is illegal, smuggle might be more accurate.

Marjorie Taylor Greene finds bomb at border!!

…alleged an “explosive device” was found at the border earlier this year as she asked a question about the threat that the cartel presents to border patrol agents and Americans. Ortiz responded by saying that most information around that matter is “confidential.”

Later that day, Greene doubled down on Twitter, posting a picture of the alleged explosive device she claimed agents found at the border and argued “the Cartel” was “planting bombs” and “murdering Americans everyday through drugs and crime.”

Ortiz corrected the record in a post of his own.

“Today, I testified before the Committee on Homeland Security & it was alleged that Agents found an explosive device near the border,” Ortiz wrote, sharing the same image Greene posted in her tweet. “During a Jan. briefing, leadership was notified that Agents found a duct-taped ball filled with sand that wasn’t deemed a threat to agents/public.”

…which actually was a bag of sand.
Reminds me of the time during the Iraq War when right-wing militias were sure Al-Qaeda terrorists were pouring across the border from Mexico. As evidence, they found an Al-Qaeda flag covered in weird foreign Muslim writing.
Announced as proof positive all over right-win media- and turned out to be an old Adidas soccer T-shirt.

And:

God, did they just pass her around?

You decide!

Maybe he’s a full assed Santos… (tldr: Ogles used his still born child (photo included) to bamboozle $25k out of people):

Ogles is the rep in the area for the shooting of the day (Covenant School shooting, cause otherwise we’ll lose track). Here’s his Christmas photo:

Lindsey Graham is a worm.

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2023/04/09/graham_us_needs_china_to_know_that_if_they_blockade_taiwan_us_will_blockade_china.html

He’s blowing up Taiwan’s importance and in a week when Trump shits his pants over the morning news he’ll forget all about sending the weapons or upping the US ante with nuclear tipped subs.

Worm prick.
