Another wrestler, Terunofuji Harao , was rocketing up the makuuchi ranks a few years ago when he tore the meniscus in one knee, and was then found to also have diabetes. To control the diabetes he went on a special diet that promptly stripped him of more than 40kg. He fell from ozeki all the way out of makuuchi, to juryo, and then he left sumo altogether. However, he’s making a comeback now, at age 29.

When he smiles Terunofuji kind of looks like a gigantic happy kid. When he was ozeki, and fat, Japanese women in the tv audience would beam huge smiles at him and try to pinch him when he walked by. (When he was skinny you could kind of see that he might be handsome, I guess.) There is another sumo wrestler, Endo, who is also simultaneously almost comically endomorphic and the object of much female admiration in Japan.

Capping an amazing career comeback, in his first foray back in the Makuuchi rank (after three three tournaments way down in the minor leagues of sumo) today Terunofuji won the Nagoya Basho with a record of 13-2.

Both yokozuna were out with injuries (he never had to face them). He lost three years of his prime to diabetes, and in his first tournament back in the big league won as a Maegashira #17, the lowest rank there is in Makuuchi.

Pretty amazing day in sumo, in Nagoya.
