When I met Luigi Mangione - UnHerd
Health insurance companies don’t get rich by denying payouts. As the economics blogger Noah Smith points out, UnitedHealthcare’s net profit is about half of the average of S&P 500 companies. According to the Harvard economist David Cutler, who has written extensively about the US healthcare system, healthcare costs are so high because of administrative inefficiencies. Insurance companies have become so bureaucratically bloated as to administrate a wildly unstandardised healthcare system. This bloat now accounts for one-third of the delta between US healthcare costs and those of other high-income countries.
Huh, guess he should have shot the bloat. Imagine that-- the nutter was wrong.
Since 2020 every US doctor I’ve met in private practice complains about regulatory burden. They all say good luck to new doctors who want to set up their own practice. The key to success, they say, is hiring at least one back-office expert in health insurance. My PCP told me he joined a small physician group for just this reason and that they have ten (10!) non-medical employees who are experts in insurance remuneration, all on salary and each earning >$US100k/yr. That’s >$1M in salary expense before the docs themselves are paid their first dollar. There are four doctors in that group.
At the federal level DOGE would probably be a huge winner - would put $$ in every American’s pocket - if it could just find a way to streamline federal healthcare regulation.
What New York’s burning woman tells us about our times - spiked
If silence is violence, why is sitting by filming a murder not? If we can cancel people for not calling men ma’am, and dead naming, why aren’t the filmers and posters and retweeters canceled?
Things fall apart and stay the same. This after two kids were stabbed walking to the votech campus across the street last week.
Ugh.

The Tish James I know is a bully and a hypocrite
James, the pretend fighter for the little people, apparently declared that a house she bought in Virginia in 2023 was her primary residence, though as New York’s top prosecutor, she was required by law to live in this state.
More bizarrely, she is accused of purchasing another property with her father as a co-signer — but falsely listing the pair as “husband and wife” in 1983 and 2000.
All this, allegedly, to get cheaper mortgage rates. She could face criminal charges.
Could? Shold would be better. She should lose her job.
And from the Governor? Nada
As of now, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has not publicly commented on the allegations of mortgage fraud against New York State Attorney General Letitia James.
“Now, I’ll note that one of the things that Letitia James stressed in her case against Trump is that Trump had to review documents that were filed in his name,” Turley added. “So she dismissed the argument that this was something that Trump’s people put together. She said, ‘He’s ultimately responsible.’ So they alleged that she gave a power of attorney in a couple of these instances. But according to her own standard, that’s not enough.”
