If they had led with “Disgraced lawmaker” it would have been more honester.
He was convicted of 11 ethics violations. The House found he had failed to pay taxes on a vacation villa, filed misleading financial disclosure forms and improperly solicited donations for a college center from corporations with business before his committee.
Adams has a shot in November’s general election. After all, he’s won before — and he still has the mayor’s bully pulpit.
But he’s going to need to form a new coalition that builds on his success in 2021, when he brought outer-borough black and Hispanic workers together with union workers and moderates worried about crime.
Despite Mamdani’s emphasis on affordability, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo won the low-income vote Tuesday. Most of those voters will likely migrate to Adams.
The mayor will also need to ring up huge numbers in Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods — which supported Cuomo by margins as high as 80% — whose residents are alarmed by the prospect of a Mamdani mayoralty
Adams can point to his new Mayor’s Office to Combat Antisemitism as proof he’s standing up to protect the city’s Jews, using a power only a sitting mayor has.
And he’d have to whip up enthusiasm among Asian voters threatened by Mamdani’s support for eliminating the SHSAT, the screening exam for the city’s specialized high schools.
Adams, by contrast, has protected those elite schools and other opportunities for accelerated learning.
He’s a cartoonishly corrupt clown, and a thoroughly compromised Trump toadie, owner of many failed promises, with ever sinking popularity. Most New Yorkers think he should outright resign. Not much hope there! Him and Cuomo can only cannibalize each other, I predict.
I was expecting that! But the deadline has passed to exit the ballot. One might endorse others, but they’ll be on the ballot. A lot of things can still happen. We’ve had progressive mayors, that won’t be unusual if Mamdani wins.
Mamdani’s success as a socialist running as a Democrat, like that of Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, might persuade some of the more sectarian DSA members that working to promote socialist candidates within the Democratic Party is no heresy. In fact, it’s the only effective way to advance socialist policies and causes.
As well as some even outside of the DSA who were totally disillusioned by the Bernie experience. I listen to some of these types, and even they are showing since cautious enthusiasm.
New York is reportedly home to a more diverse set of Muslims than any other city on the planet
I never thought about that, but I’m sure it’s true.
