Animal rights advocates are moving closer to getting a radical initiative onto Oregon’s November ballot that would criminalize almost all activities that injure or kill animals.
David Michelson, one of the chief petitioners for the PEACE Act (People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions), said Wednesday that his group has gathered about 105,000 signatures that still need to be verified. That puts the initiative within striking distance of the 117,173 verified signatures needed by July 2 to make it onto the ballot.
Hunting, fishing, slaughtering livestock, animal research and even pest control would be effectively banned if Initiative Petition 28 makes it onto the ballot and then passes.
You know, if you move past the hippie urban coast, the interior of Oregon/Washington State are dotted with deep red small towns, real Deliverance territory. Hunting and fishing are vital cornerstones of rural culture. Literally anyone can propose literally any law. I can propose a ban on nose rings as cultural appropriation of bovine fashion.
