The TSMC Thread

Hahaha.

Like Morris Chang said, there were days when all ethnic Chinese people could do in the US was own a restaurant or a laundromat. Those days are long gone.

It’s more supply issue than a demand issue.

Aww poor Waishengren Morris Chang never had a penny to scratch together like the other Taiwanese who could get a passport in the 50s and 60s. Did it the hard way with millions in government support. Tough times, almost cry for him as much as poor Horse Face.

Actually it’s interesting he spent almost no time in Taiwan in his early life. Never knew that.

He is Chinese and an American. I doubt he identify himself as Taiwanese. He came to Taiwan in late 80s with American passport as semi retired for fat paid job in government. Saw opportunity, got money from state and use his connections, know how from USA to build TSMC. He said Taiwan was weird and poor country back than and he didn’t like it.

Chang as foreigner definitely qualify for director board of Forumosa. Who said Taiwan is not an immigration nation. Full of successful Chinese.

Funny how Taiwanese complain USA try to steal TSM, when Chang outsourced from USA in the first place. Typically for rich Chinese - Taiwanese folks, taking full advantages of USA and milk locals in Asia.

Do you know how YS Sun got Taiwanese engineers to go back to Taiwan from the US?

He told them, you’re an ethnic minority in the US and English is your second language. You’ll never make it to the top. Come back.

In other words, a lie. Lots of U.S. tech companies headed by Asians. If he were talking about Westerners in Taiwan, he’d have a point.

Not a lie. Back then was a different time.

Marketing execs at Taiwanese IT companies are all white.

Guess you didn’t see the “headed” part.

Still a lie. He said “you’ll never make it to the top.”

Yahoo, YouTube, Nvidia, ViewSonic, Zoom, Peleton, Fitbit, Twitch, Patreon, Nerdwallet, Coursera, Wang Laboratories, Linksys…all American companies started by Asians.

And in the U.S. Taiwanese Americans have better educations and higher salaries than white Americans, and are more successful than most other Asian Americans as well.

It’s not a lie. (1) It was the 70s and 80s.
(2) the fact that you have to start your own company doesn’t change things.

For the longest time, Asians were underrepresented in Silicon valley management. In the 90s they were 30% of engineers and only 10% of management.

What part of “never” don’t you understand?

People don’t live forever.

They don’t need to. Plenty of time to start successful companies and earn top dollar.

Yeah in Taiwan, not 70s 80s USA.

Wang Laboratories was started in the 1950s! Bose was started in the 1960s. And Kingston Technologies in the 1980s.
