TIGER on the loose in Linkou
They baited a trap with a chicken and caught … a stray dog? Fuck me! Who would have thought it! I mean, this is rural Taiwan for heaven’s sake. If they were lucky enough to find a stray here it must SURELY be the culprit. Plus, if it’s smart enough to shake hands, it could probably easily figure out how to put on large paw covers to fool the authorities.
It’s obvious. Kill it! Kill it!
on top of the fact that (according to the pictures shown on the tube) the set traps were barely large enough for a dog to squeeze into, never mind a tiger, or a velociraptor, or a …

It must have been the Lithgow Lion… or the Penrith Panther

Sydney’s Blue Mountains are plagued by repeated stories of escaped felines (suggestedly perhaps mascots of military units stationed nearby in the past) which are ‘confirmed’ by continued sightings of ‘a large black cat’ that eats calves and sheep. and it’s not jsut there: many similr stories exist. A large animal (perhaps normal sized but still large) frightens people who come aross it in the dark or semi-seen in undergrowth, and they interpret it in ways that they have the mental language for. hence a Filipino describing a tiger, etc. the animal grows eah time the story is passed on from one person to another…

a situation which is not helpe by pictures of 11 year olds shooting pigs the size of busses, etc. Sure he did! And he only used a pissant little .22 as well, and shot him clean through the eye from 500 yards. That is one tough kid…blah blah.

And if there really is a shred of truth to these fairy tales, then that damned animal is going to be a lot harder to catch than simply using a chicken in a mouse trap.

True, Urodacous, but hold on just a minute. There’s a sheep-killer up near where my folks live that was assumed to be a particularly clever feral dog – until someone recently got a clear photo and good Christ! It really is some kind of panther. Clear as day. Unbelievable.

Interesting report on today’s Taipei Times:

Beast of Linkou’s latest victim is an illegal migrant
An Indonesian woman working at a farm who told police she had witnessed the attack said she had just entered a goat pen to feed the animals when “a big animal” roared at her, whereupon she fell down the stairs.

Police said yesterday that the woman was in the country illegally and would soon be deported. Her employer will be fined, they said.

The fears of what people are going to do to stray dogs in that area are well-founded, but it seems authorities are taking a cautious approach:
Tsai said county authorities would soon launch a campaign to catch stray dogs in the area to ensure the security of residents.

On Saturday morning, Taipei County Commissioner Chou Hsi-wei (周錫瑋) led police officers and animal experts on a search in the mountainous area around the farm.

County officials said they hoped to catch the animal(s) alive and were equipped with a cage, tranquillizer guns and blowpipes.

Good news regarding Xiao Bai, the white dog first caught during the “hunt for the Linkou chupacabras”. He was shown last night in the news at a training center in Taoyuan, where he has made great progress. He looks a lot healthier and plumpier, his coat is clean, he is still a bit shy around people, but he is learning to obey when told to sit or lay down, walk properly, and many other useful skills. They hope he can be put up for adoption pretty soon.

That is a very nice ending compared to the alternative, going to doggie heaven.
