'Tis the season...for scammers

I received this email today from “Chunghwa Post”…

This was not surprising because I am expecting a package from the U.S. However, the US tracking info shows that the package is still being processed at US customs. So, let’s look at this email a little closer…

Well now, that’s an interesting email address.

Hey, what’s this at the bottom of the email from “Chunghwa Post”?..
chunghwa in us

When you click on the Send My Package link it takes you to a “Chunghwa Post” payment screen, but only on your phone. When I opened the email on my PC and clicked the link…

These stupid scammers gave me a New Year’s chuckle this morning.

They are out and about in several countries. I get regular SMS entries (Google tosses them into spam and blocks the number in most cases) about parcels that cannot be delivered to me in Australia and to ‘click on the link below’. Needless to say, I dont bother. The links apparently come in two types - one that asks for certain personal details to be input, while the other apparently gives them permission to access certain data on the phone.

Beware!!!

Avoid clicking the links in emails at all costs, even if it is funny.

It verifies the email address is valid, then all they need is some kind of cookie grab attack and then they have access.

Why would you click on that?!?!?!?

I have gotten these same emails at my school email address over the last couple of years at least.

A package - for me! Especially at Christmas time. Hmmm.

“Oh the Wells Fargo wagon is a coming down the street, Oh let it please be for me.”

This is the modern version of the Nigerian Prince scam.

Well done to report on it @Steve4nLanguage

I’ve heard this warning, but what actually could happen? They already have my email address (a very old address that I don’t use for anything but I do check it from time to time), and I didn’t enter any info on the linked page. I really want to know.

You expose yourself to malware. If a scammer sends a link for you to click on, don’t.

Since you’re smart enough to see the signs and not enter information, they might not have installed something on your system, but why take the risk?

OK, thanks. If that’s the case then hopefully my malware checking thingy picks up on it.

There are multitude of Chunghua Post scams especially via email.

One thing for sure, Chunghwa Post or any other banks in Taiwan will never write to you only in English.
It’s either Chinese only, or Chinese-English hybrid.

The sender then also knows this address is deliverable and belongs to a real person. That will be their cue to send even more spam or sell the address to others.

Mac mail used to have the ability to bounce back mail as undelivered even after you opened it, this was great for dealing with spam, they seam to have dropped it about 5 or more years ago.
