To be fair, France seems to be a good example of how a society can be geared too far in favour of “worker’s rights”. But that isn’t a model I think other countries should follow.
If you ask most American conservatives if they think the min wage should increase with the rate of inflation or the CPI index. Or if they think the wages should be adjusted for a certain high cost location, most would say yes. But if you ask them if a $8/hr fast food worker should all of the sudden double in wages, most will probably say no.
France is often considered the only country where socialism worked.
On point, though, a high minimum wage in France negatively impacted lower income households. I’d need to read up on it again but it is somewhere to the tune of 5 times the unemployment rate to every increase in minimum pay.
Italy has a interesting one, they have no min wage. Unions of a industry set their own. I don’t know enough about how that actually works to comment to much on it. I can see some pros and cons, but I know Italy is a bit of a economic failure so maybe it doesn’t work well.
Some foreigners complain about the low minimum wage in Taiwan but when them start a business and they look for employees they pay the minimum wage. Lol
I was told the way to get jobs is connections. It’s all about connections in Italy. No other way really. Not in this job market. It’s why young people are fleeing Italy.
That is actually a smart move since if Italy had minimum wage it would likely be low. No minimum wage = no one would complain about minimum wage being much lower than min. wage in France/Germany etc.
Well if you had a minimum wage it would make it illegal for the mafia to get people to pay for jobs. I’m not sure if that would hold up in practice, i’m not sure sure of the ins and outs. Basically i am just illustrating how corrupt italy is and that the lack of a minimum wage there clearly isn’t benefiting the place.
Isn’t it already illegal to do that? And wouldn’t raising wages just make people more willing to pay to get those jobs?
In California it’s illegal to charge actors to participate in “workshops” that are really auditions and barely even disguised as anything educational, yet it’s a cash cow for the people who run the scam, it saves money producers would otherwise spend maintaining their own casting departments, struggling actors keep lining up to hand over the cash, and last I heard no-one had ever been prosecuted for it. Now I assume the majority of those jobs are subject to SAG-AFTRA jurisdiction ergo they have a union-defined MW far above the MW for the general public. Remove the non-union MW, and nothing changes. Remove the union MW, and… if anything, applicants should be less willing to play along. Raise the union MW, and it increases the incentive to pay.
(Alternatively, leave the wages alone but enforce the damn anti-scam law.)
