The US is leaving Taiwan high and dry regardless of what they do, so why hand over a huge chunk of leverage to a country that will give absolutely nothing in return. Trump still isn’t going to come to Taiwan’s aid if China attacks. So you’ve just given up leverage for no reason. Awful move.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s the most advanced stuff or not. Taiwan is giving the US the means to make chips in their country that it can’t make otherwise. That’s leverage thats being given away for nothing in return.

True. But the bully next door isn’t satisfied as easily either. Nothing short of unification will quench their thirst. Investing a bit overseas is nothing in comparison.
Putting those factories in USA seems very stupid from a geopolitcal sense. Once the US based factories are up and running, the Taiwan based tsmc factories wil be regarded as rivals or even a threat to US national security.
It means US has a incentive to provoke a war where Taiwan based factories would be destroyed - leaving the USA as sole producer of advanced chips - able to charge any price.
Again that’s not how semiconductors work. Any fab is old news within 2 years and the chips are more or less a commodity after 6 years.

That’s not the point. The point is that leverage is still being given away for absolutely nothing in return, as the US is still being given the ability to make chips they were unable to make before. Also obvious tech is advancing lightning speed, so it’s not about 2-4nm. It’s about protecting our country with the o ly thing the world needs from us, outside of geography. I’m not normally a big fan of government protection ism, but for us here in Taiwan it’s existential. And all without a single farauntee of protection. Since the first abandonment by the US of Taiwan towards China, j til jow. All their treaties, acts and otherwise do not explicitly describe ANY comitement to protecting Taiwan. We absolutely should give the US fuck all with proper security deals and protection, otherwise we just baragjan against the US [eg. Towards their pauedo enemies] until they fall in line.
