I’m not sure I get it. Maybe Forumosa didn’t go about it properly? Used the wrong language or something? Didn’t devote enough words to it?
Wikileaks have released 400 000 documents concerning Iraq. warlogs.wikileaks.org/
Torture, civilian death tolls, executions etc.
Discuss.
The American death tally is at 1500… lord knows what the Iraqi one is “coz this time we ain’t counting”. The vast majority of these deaths have occurred subsequent to the American adminstration declaring that major operations are over.
Whatever your views on the Iraq war, the number of civilians deaths sounds pretty high if that news is accurate. Surely, the point is to minimize deaths of those not involved right?
The truth of the matter is that the civilian death toll is probably far higher. They always suffer the most in any conflict, most especially that involving urban areas.
Obama may have some diplomatic difficulties not looking backwards this time. Spiegel is going all out - even using a picture of a screaming little girl wearing her parents’ blood.
Sticking to English though… Reuters quotes DoD reaction:
“We deplore WikiLeaks for inducing individuals to break the law, leak classified documents and then cavalierly share that secret information with the world,” Geoff Morrell, Pentagon press secretary, said.
…which tacitly means, “We on the other hand encourage inducing individuals to kill and destroy without conscience, lying about documented horrors of war and then cavalierly sharing false information with the world.”
. . .
And 109,000 KIA (edit 66,000 civilian) = “drop in the bucket”? Not comparing to 2,977 obviously.
Just to give it some perspective:
Surveys pointing to high civilian death toll in Iraq
Preliminary reports suggest casualties well above the Gulf War.
By Peter Ford | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor
BAGHDAD - Evidence is mounting to suggest that between 5,000 and 10,000 Iraqi civilians may have died during the recent war, according to researchers involved in independent surveys of the country.
Could it also be a question of the scale of death and horror inflicted on other parts of the world…that cause people to hate GW and the United States of Aggression (USA) with a passion?..

Edited to add:
I remember coming home from high school and getting a copy of Life Magazine from the hooks under the mailbox, taking it inside, opening it up, and seeing the pictures of the My Lai massacre, and thinking, well, they’ve got to stop the war now. And they did stop our direct participation in it, about three years after that Life Magazine issue.
