I think the era of the tank is over

I refrained from posting links to VICE because of the many dead bodies they show…

I linked to a great analysis about the role of tanks in the future above. Modern tanks are still valuable, the rusting death traps not so much.

The Russians were really hyping their new T-14 for a while, but it seems they haven’t built many yet.

Tanks are not the preferred weapons in the fight against corruption, that’s for sure. Russia seems to be rotting from the core, or from the head. Either way, Obama was right, it’s a regional power at best.

I am far from being a specialist on this kind of military operation, but I’ve read that the seasonal “opening” in which this kind of massive operation can occur across the Taiwan Strait is quite narrow. Based on what I have read, it cannot be done willy nilly at any time.

One thing is getting the boots on the ground during good weather. Then there will be a period where those troops are relying on the supplies brought in from the mainland. Not sure how long it would take the Chinese to get their hands on the fuel and food they need in Taiwan. Ammunition has still be brought in over the strait.

The obvious miscalculation in timing by the Russians has cost them dearly, I think.

Yes, exactly. But my point is the weather is primarily an obstacle to an amphibious invasion. If China can successfully establish themselves here with a port, airfield, or both, the weather won’t be as much of an obstacle to supplying it. They’ll be well on the way to winning, in other words. If Taiwan can prevent that from happening within the window, then things will be a lot more optimistic.

Premature. And if so, why did Zelensky just ask to be sent tanks and planes?

Tanks have their place when properly supported by infantry. This has been the preferred doctrine since WW2. For various reasons Russia chose differently.

Eh? That is the true cost of this war. And in any case, VICE blurs out anything too gruesome for sensitive minds.

Just feel we have to draw the line somewhere. Links to sources showing dead bodies, blurred or not, I think that’s beyond that line. I watch it, so I am fine with it, but others might feel it’s too much.

Turns out zelensky would not have been better served with planes and tanks

Missiles do a better job

A tank has infantry to prevent people from swarming them and using even Molotov
Cocktails to incapacitate them

A tank is essentially a mobile
Cannon and has defenses
Against other mobile cannons ie tanks

But when faced with tank killing missiles that can be controlled miles away little
Good the infantry is then and little good are the tanks

Old school WW2 stuff says tanks supported by troops are the best way to take ground

Tanks can blow up structures in the way as well as
Defense positions and other tanks and artillery

Very useful

But

If they face drones sent from hundreds of miles away and missiles that can be shot from miles away

I wouldn’t want to be in a tank in todays battlefield with those weapons against me

There is a reason the Russians are abandoning their tanks

The benefit of a tank is that you have room and power for more computing equipments than anything portable. In the future tanks will live on by having TPU powered computers that identify targets using lidar, 3D point cloud, deep learning models and neutralize portable antitank weapons before they can acquire targets, using missiles or drones.

Surprise, surprise. So all that talk of nazism in Ukraine was bs. Also, Putin wants more than Ukraine staying away from NATO. All lies.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed some of his country’s ground rules for a peace agreement with Russia on Sunday, but Russian authorities moved to censor the interview, perhaps because Zelenskyy also said that while Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed the invasion aims to “denazify” Ukraine, peace talks with Russia have not involved any discussion on Ukraine’s supposed “Nazism.” (Emphasis added.)

There will be countless media studies accounts of this war in the future—and countless case studies for teaching—on how digital video (produced using phones) and social media has transformed the mediascape. And, as @hannes is pointing out, how journalistic ethics works—to show truths while also retaining the dignity of the millions of people affected by this invasion.
