Wack things in China

Id see ‘ongoing protests’ as a potentially positive sign in terms of ‘democracy’.

Not necessarily. Hong Kong had widespread protests in 2019 and now everyone’s moving to Britain and Taiwan.

According to multiple NGOs Serbia’s democratic backsliding in the past decade is amongst the worst in the world.

Yeah I think it pretty obvious that democracy in eastern - and western - Europe is on the back foot. Unfortunately.

I think the Russian sphere of influence is obviously one of the factors. But obviously - that’s my word of the day - there are other things going on too.

I still think being able to have protests is a positive sign in comparison to say Syria not that that is anything to be excited about. But it’s something at least.

Also on a side note, I think that ‘everyone’ may refer to ‘not everyone’?

That was obviously exaggeration, but in 2020 alone 100k HKers left HK for the UK, Canada and Taiwan. Hong Kong only has 7 million people. It’d be like 300k Taiwanese leaving Taiwan or 5 million Americans leaving America in a year. That’s insane.

I guess the idea that HK has an expiry date combined with really high rents and property prices are driving that.

Whenever I was at the visa agents in HK there were typically a bunch of foreigners getting China visas, and a handful of Hongkongers and Chinese moving to Canada. The visa agents I think had a larger fee/profit from the latter

They are also sending their kids to school in Ireland , boarding schools , and buying houses there. They are driving the price of private education up (used to be very reasonable there ).

UK has an obligation to Hong Kong people

On Tuesday, several videos surfaced on Twitter showing four men clad in white PPE being escorted by two police officers, also in white hazmat suits, being publicly paraded through a street in Baise City in Guangxi’s Jingxi County. A long line of police can be seen flanking either side of the street, while crowds of onlookers gawk at the spectacle.

The men can be seen holding huge photos of themselves with their names and other information scrawled below. A voice can be heard broadcast over loudspeakers admonishing the public to dutifully follow epidemic prevention regulations.

Scroll down and look at the videos. This is about as wack as you get.

I have personally witnessed the same done with prisoners after they had been sentenced.

I didn’t know what to think about this

Sounds like the VHI, lol

I think probably the only upbeat angle is that those kinds of parades have met with public criticism in the larger cities. Guangxi is a layer in and may need a little time to get there

China is a country run by dull middle-aged men who can do what they want. This is the end result.

Horrifying thread about the level of censorship and online rage with regards to journalism in China now, even for what looks like a fluff piece about food.
