Wack things in China

Nothing brings people together better than a sacrificial burning

“Cracking down on Halloween” when it isn’t even Halloween…

This is a new low for make up day nonsense.

Or straw dogs, as in the famous passage from the Tao Te Ching - heaven and earth care as little for us we do for straw dogs.

My local Facebook group sent out a message saying people can drop off garbage on the day of the bonfire. Local council charges to take away garbage. The people have a big bonfire.

Are some people seriously going to burn household rubbish on the bonfire ?

Guy Fawkes bonfire seems to be an adapted all Hallows /Halloween bonfire that was done for political or religious reasons. It clearly descends from Samhain/All Hallows, they shifted the dates across and just combined existing festivals into this new ‘celebration’ of burning somebody every year. Bit like Christmas was actually adapted from existing pagan festivals.

I miss having bonfires. My whole family used to gather at my nans place to burn some shit in the garden. Twas a simpler time.

My granny used to burn trash on the farm in plastic bags. Ahh those were the days…

Samhain / All Saints / All Hallows (Eve), has always been separate to Bonfire or as it was known in the 1600’s “Observance of 5 November”. the plot should have all gone down in February but plague pushed opening of parliament back till autumn.

Halloween was a very different thing when I was a kid, with our candles, turnips and remembering people who had passed.

We used to have barn brac which is like a currant cake, and there would be bits and pieces in it like a fortune cookie type deal. Then there was dunking for apples with coins in the apple. Then there was a blind mans bluff non aquatic apple dunk with fruit, onions, and soap on a string hanging in a doorway, and you had to pin it and bite taking care not to mix up the apple onion and soap.

Of course this all went out the window when the new racier American trick or treating exploded onto the scene: we would wear black rubbish bags and put flour on our faces and go door to door declaring trick or treat, and amazingly the scam worked!

Some of the best moments of life right there. Somewhere along the way it all went wrong and transformed into ‘whack things in China’

I am guessing it is going to be old wooden tables and other stuff like that. I hope.

The UK is shite but they still collect the household waste…sometimes.

I remember one episode sitting in a field and my friend was flicking matches, it was the summer and wound up with a huge fire featuring a fire brigade and everything. Ah childhood!

In Taiwan we dump it over the mountain side… out of sight, out of mind… gone like magic

One of my neighborhood bonfires today had some firetrucks visit

This belongs in another thread really, but since we’re on the topic.

Because helicopter parents today never want their kids to walk around unsupervised at night and out of their sight. What will this generation do when they have to encounter the real world as adults? Their parents have been overprotective their entire lives. An entire generation of Bubble Boys.

Who need guns when there are cars and crowds everywhere?

Who are you?
I’m Chinese.
Of course you are.

They always make themselves look like absolute twats.

After his rampage he tried to kill himself with a knife to the neck.
He was upset about property division after divorce.

Looks like the govt will grant him his wish then.

Well it looks like Winnie the Pooh is invested, so yea, probably a bullet.

BBC journalists reporting on it were attacked by this guy.
