It reminds me of a comment on imdb about an episode of Dallas, when JR Ewing (of Texas) goes to another southern state for some reason, Arkansas or Alabama I think, and gets himself arrested without managing to reach his lawyer. The episode portrays the place as a caricature of a corrupt backwater – trial is a sham, warden uses prisoners as slave labor, etc… The comment was to the effect of this could have been plausible in the 1950’s but is insultingly unrealistic in the 1980’s. I don’t know enough about the southern states to judge that, but in general I think it’s easy to be overly idealistic about progress (in any part of the planet).
