Not sure if you noticed Trump’s tweets and pressers as of late, but it is quite clear that Donald is essentially a powder keg of unpredictability at the moment. He is an irrational actor that is now quite possibly advancing to an even more instable level of unpredictability and irrationality. America has not been this distracted, this divided, in many years.
This message could possibly be an effort to massage Trump’s bruised ego, a means to curry much-needed favor in the midst of his current downward mental spiral. The US, and especially US allies that need protection, are in a very vulnerable state right now – this cannot be overstated. A very dangerous time for Taiwan as Trump foments chaos and instability in the US.
I suspect this window will remain open until the baton is passed successfully and (hopefully) without a hitch.
Oh it definitely is - just a conjecture. I tried to qualify with the words “could possibly be” to soften it up. I don’t know what I don’t know, but I know enough to not sound sure here.
At 3 p.m. that day, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) personally took to MOFA’s Twitter account to express thanks for the Trump administration’s “staunch support and friendship.” Wu asserted that during the four years of Trump’s presidency, Taiwan has become “stronger, safer & more capable of choosing its own future” and indicated that this would be an “enduring legacy” of Trump’s policy toward the country.
Nukes are useless in that everyone lost once it’s used.
Taiwan needs air superiority and a naval fleet to match. We are very lucky the PLA only has 3 realistic landing sites for an invasion. Make the losses so bad before they even get a chance to get to one of them and it’s over for those 1 child policy only sons once they realized what they’ve gotten themselves into.
Nuclear energy is very, very safe. Even though Fukushima is worst case, how many people died? How many people have died in the entire history of nuclear power? How many people die from the pollution caused by traditional power plants? You are very misinformed. Solar and wind will not be enough. When the last two nuclear plants are shut down, Taiwan will need to burn more fossil fuels making the air worse, and it will need to import expensive liquefied natural gas. Look for an increase in utility rates. Don’t believe me, see what happened in Germany.
Yes, but useless if someone uses it. I see no difference if Taiwan has it at this point. We can’t pull a NK and start threatening everyone, nor should we.
True enough- if Taiwan had developed nukes in the 1970s they would be in a much stronger position vis-a-vis China. The problem is trying to make them now
