What movies are you watching? (2021)

Casino isn’t as good as Good Fellas, in my opinion, but it’s also an excellent movie.

Scarface (83) is famously THE movie of choice for black (wannabe-)gangstas.

Dr. Strangelove, yes. I haven’t seen a James Bond movie I’ve liked.

And speaking of “Friends” (as we were over at the TV thread)

Ross: Rachel claims this is her favorite movie
Chandler: Dangerous Liaisons
Ross: What is her actual favorite movie?
Joey: Weekend at Bernie’s
Ross: Correct

Camus would not be happy with the ending.

Ok just for that comment I need to watch it hahaha

Is women vs. men becoming a genre of its own?

has been for a while, these lists didn’t even have the more recent ones i was thinking of

https://screenrant.com/best-revenge-movies-women-men/

here’s one of the new ones that i had in mind

For those who think the current state of affairs is not gloomy enough, I recommend:

Nihilst through and through, with shades of Michael Haneke. Mexico City is the perfect setting for this class war, where no good deed goes unpunished.

Alternative tagline: What would really happen after the end of Joker?

American Psycho

Christopher Bale, good but caught me off-guard I thought it was going to be like a high Finance Wall Street movie which was a sub-plot, narccistic, funny then gruesome, like a sadistic insane Jim Carrey

American Psycho: Directed by Mary Harron. With Christian Bale, Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Bill Sage. A wealthy New York City investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman, hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he...

I watched this last night. It’s very enjoyable and funnier than I expected! A lot of the same people as Into the Spider-Verse and The Lego Movie: not quite as good or innovative as either of those, but it still worked well. If you loved either of those, this is a must-watch; if you didn’t like them, don’t bother. And it’s always nice to watch an animated film that isn’t obviously Pixar or obviously Dreamworks and is having fun with what the genre can do.

Upthread I recommended Wolfwalkers. I think that’s a better film - that’s absolutely brilliant, mainly because of the art style. I don’t love Mitchells the same way, but it’s more fun; I’d put it at the level of top-tier Dreamworks or second-tier Pixar. Like Wolfwalkers, Mitchells is probably worth a second watch simply because there is so much going on on the screen.

There’s a family drama plot and a sci-fi plot that don’t quite mesh, and if you think too much the dad doesn’t make sense (a Journey album reference, and zero tech knowledge, from a person who’s presumably in their 30s today?). Olivia Colman is brilliant, as always, as (mild spoiler) Evil-Siri. Very dumb “Record scratch, you’re probably wondering how we got here” opening, and I almost turned it off at that point, but that passes quickly. It occasionally edges into Dreamworks territory of overdoing the references, and is so technologically placed in today’s moment that I doubt it’ll age well, but in 2021, it’s a fun watch. And it’s on Netflix, so presumably almost everyone has it available anyway.

‘A Bronx Tale’ (1993), good period drama about a kid growing up under the mentor ship of a mob boss in the 1960s. Although I think it makes the mafia look a little harmless and heart-of-goldish compared to other flicks of the era like ‘Good Fellas’ and ‘Casino’ (both of which are better). The real bad guys in this aren’t even the mafia, but the “wrong crowd” ™ the teenage protagonist falls in with. Still, solid story, directing, dialogue, and acting… just not as epic or as memorable as a Scorsese mob flick. 8.5/10

Saw ‘Frequency’ for the first time, from 2000? Neat premise and plot ideas, but not rocket science to follow or anything. Popcorn fare but clever.

Yeah, agree. Though it’s implied they’re so nice just because Sonny is holding them back, with things about to get worse after he’s gone.

Anybody got good recommends on where to find 1980s and 1990s movies online. For rent etc?

There’s a few classics I want to rewatch and show the kids.

Caddyshack.

I use Apple’s iTunes Store for that sort of thing. I’m not sure which devices can handle that content: it used to be only Apple TVs, but I think other things can now play it.

What I watched bin the last week’s:

Lupin III: You’ll never guess who makes an appearance on screen

Sorry to bother you: You’ll never guess what appears on screen.

I saw this once a while ago, it was brilliant

Just finished Westworld (1973). Considering trying the HBO series now

I really liked the first season but don’t think I made it to the end of the second. For me it collapsed under the weight of its own plot. If you do watch it, let us know what you think and how far you get!
