Isn’t it low social mobility that lets the terrorists win?
I don’t even know who the terrorists are!
That’s what a terrorist would say. Just sayin’. ![]()
If Barbieland is a mirror image of anything it’s a feminist funhouse mirror image of a “reality” only a feminist would recognize. If it’s meant to educate anyone with its symbolism it’s a ham-fisted attempt.
Likewise if Allan is supposed to a positive male image. The last thing fatherless latchkey boys need is another useless, self-loathing buffoon in the Homer Simpson/Al Bundy mode to help form their self image of what a male is.
Ummmmmm. Maybe for the benefit of those who are focused on the Barbie phenomenon you guys/gals can start your own thread on this fascinating topic?
Just sayin’…
my apologies for kinda domineering the thread these past few days

decided to stop with the end of discussion with Superking, which I now see was a good decision given the alternative ![]()
Absolutely agree- in fact I pointed out where two much more recent films than Birth of a Nation were huge box office successes despite being absolute crap (haven’t seen Barbie; no intention of seeing it). (But then I didn’t like Star Wars either.)
The new StarWars series sucks. The prequels were also bad but at least had some redeeming qualities to them (at least the latter two)
Geek movie talk!
The prequels had some moments, but overall, sucked, sucked, sucked, sucked.
Ep. 7 was actually good… which isn’t a surprise, given it’s a better acted remake of Ep 4, complete with Death Star. ha. I was going to murder someone if ANOTHER death star showed up in 8 or 9.
I love Star Wars. But as movies, they’re pretty bad movies. I’m ok with that. ;D Other than maybe Rogue One - that’s a good space war movie, vs a campy space spaghetti western.
Rogue one was great
I still love all those films tho, but rogue one was awesome given how different it is in tone
Finally watched Everything Everywhere All At Once
Have been putting it off because I’m a bit multiversed out, and also wanted to give it the attention it deserves. I love Michelle Yeoh and James Hong, there was also short round and I wasnt expecting Jamie Lee Curtis
Anyways, what a disappointment. Not very original; kind of a mashup of The One, The Matrix, and The Joy Luck Club. It was cute, I can see how some people would like it, not my cup of tea.
absolutely loved it. Took a lot of influences from those for sure but I think it made a wholly original story with it. Fun film if nothing else imo.
It was a really fun romp. Certain films take you back to a safe place. Rogue One was such a film.
At work today I asked my colleagues about the Barbie film. Three English women, mid twenties, all loved it. They saw it much as you did. Satire. They rated it and felt it a positive vehicle for talking about empowering women. It was awkward as a near 50 year old man to disagree with them. We concluded that it was good we all held different opinions that we could discuss in the open. I added that I thought the latest Indy film is my favourite picture of the year, to contextualise my dislike of a film they all loved and to mark me out as the shallow film watcher I have grown to become. ![]()
It was that on one hand, but on the other I love how it sits in the shadow of the greater story. It’s basically the unsung heroes story of how the events of the first star wars (how to destroy the death star) came to be. One of my friends critiqued it and asked me “name the main characters”, and he was right: I could only remember one, Cassian. But I think that’s kinda the point – they’re the nameless heroes who die such that the rest may go on to victory.
And on top of that, it was a romp ![]()

now I want to watch it again…
I can see how someone might not read it as such, and it does have like most good satire sincerity within it which makes it harder to read what’s meant to be ironic and what’s sincere. But it does have it’s problems in terms of clarity of message, clearly ![]()
Have yet to see the new Indy film, but it’s good to hear a positive opinion on it… I’ve heard a lot of less positive takes on it. Might try to go see it soon while it’s still in theaters. Grew up on that much in the same way I grew up on star wars, so obviously I’ve got some hesitance after the film that shall not be named…
Nicely worded.
Solo. Twenty minutes and I turned it off. I might never go back.
Two minutes in and that film never existed. The Dial of Destiny is a love letter to Indiana Jones fans. Like a favourite meal, or a trip back home, the Dial is the ending you are looking for.
Sick, imma try for tomorrow. Supposed to be rainy and shitty anyway, so why not.
I hope you enjoy it. I ended up seeing it twice. Once by myself on a Sunday morning early screening out in the middle of nowhere in Wiltshire. Then I saw it by chance at the Odeon Leicester Square, of all places, with some friends.
Love in Taipei
5/10, family friendly movie for teenagers and young adults, who all will probably like it better than I did.
Quite a few of the actors seem to have zero connection with Taiwan even though in the movie are supposed to be Taiwanese Americans coming to Taiwan to immerse in their own culture.
Mama Mia 2
God help me. It was truly terrible. Even Julie Walters sucked so much ass. Yikes. It ends with Andy Garcia banging Cher ![]()
