What TV shows are you watching (2022)

,

Midnight Mass on Netflix. Maybe one of the best shows that came out last year imho. Anyone see it? Very good drama with heavy religious overtones, suspense, supernatural, horror etc.

in 3 words: biblically accurate angels :scream:

edit: I was never raised religious myself and that may attribute to my fascination with it, but I have friends who grew up catholic who said it hits different too.

Never heard of it but now I’m looking for it

Excellent. Helps if you have knowledge of and interest in the era (60s). A perfect ride from the America of the 50s to the 70s, with all the changes in mores and values that ensue. Identity, women’s lib, capitalism etc.

You can really see and appreciate the effort made to recreate the 60s in all aspects. Gonna rewatch the whole thing at some point.

Book of Boba Fett: three episodes in, out of seven total. If you’re a Star Wars fan, you’re probably going to watch this anyway. If you’re not a Star Wars fan, this certainly will not win you over: we’re a big chunk into the show now, and I have no idea what our main character is trying to do, or why.

The premise so far seems to be ā€œRemember that bad-ass mysterious character from the series? What if we reveal he’s nowhere near as bad-ass as you thought, and also not very good at his new job as a gangster?ā€ I could barely see that as a Coen Brothers movie premise, but it’s not working in the Star Wars franchise so far.

I agree about the commitment factor. The title is also not doing it for me. If it was called, ā€œTits and dragons,ā€ I’d have seen it twice. As it is, I’ve not seen any of it.

There’s actually some pretty good T&A soft porn in GOT if that’s what you’re looking for. :slightly_smiling_face:

Agreed. That’s what I was getting at. It’s quite pornographic, which, if titled differently, would appear more appealing to those of us not so interested in thrones or games.
Tits and dragons.
Boobs and monsters.
Knickers and blood.
Bums and fighting.

I’d watch those shows. Simple creature that I am.

You are missing both of those if you haven’t seen it.

AND dragons? Sexy D&D???

If only I were 16 again!

Isn’t that a little old for D&D? :slightly_smiling_face:

Not the way we played.

With real swords in the sewers?

No, just a lot of weed.

My girlfriend signed up for Disney plus so I’ve been watching season 2 of legion. I like it but not as much as season 1 so far

I liked Legion but somehow I stalled out after first season and never kept going.

The start of season 2 is quite different so it turned me off at first. Now I think it has some redeeming qualities. But still a far cry from how great I felt season 1 was.

I just watched the season and series finale of The Expanse: an excellent ending, perhaps the best ending for a drama that I’ve seen since The Sopranos. It just could have used a little more exposition for how a big moment happened; I followed it but I’m not sure if those unfamiliar with the books could have.

What a fantastic ride and an under-appreciated show that’s been. Best sci-fi battles since Battlestar Galactica, great characters throughout and a consistently amazing job of turning third- and fourth- tier briefly appearing characters into real people that you care deeply about, even continuing into the last and admittedly rushed six-episode final season. It’s done such a great job of taking televised science-fiction in new directions beyond the somewhat stale Star Trek & Star Wars formulas. (Physics in space! And acceleration is an issue! Who knew?!)

Yes, it is very serialized, and if you just watch the final episode it will mean nothing to you. Maybe you could start at the beginning of Season 5 and follow it? But I highly recommend starting from the beginning. The first few episodes may seem a little slow, but wait until the Martians come into play around the third or fourth episode. If you’re not interested then, it’s not for you.

All on Amazon Prime here.

Rumors continue that there will be more to the story, but I have no idea if or when. The television series is based on a book series of the same name; the TV show matches Books 1-6. #6 is the natural end of a trilogy, and there’s a big jump to the final trilogy (final volume published a couple of months ago to good reviews): the TV series ends well, but also with obvious hooks that there’s more story to maybe come one day. I’ve been unable to put the books down when reading them, which is why I’m waiting to read #8 and probably #9 until after all my work stuff is done for the semester.

I thought this was hilarious as a comment in the Guardian.

All we need now is a subplot in which he adopts a baby version of Yoda and spends at least two episodes wiping sick off its chin.

I haven’t seen Boba Fett or any of these Star Wars shows.

Mandalorian is pretty much the best version of the dumb fun weekly adventure shows that were popular back in the 70s and 80s (and presumably earlier, since I guess those are what inspired Lucas in the first place). For what it is, it’s done well.

Boba Fett is unfortunately not good and if there were a dozen episodes I wouldn’t keep watching. But there are only seven, and I’m curious to see where it goes.
