Where are all the fine men at?
I don’t wear contact lenses or glasses (and people have asked me why). Anything at eye level in Taiwan is probably hanging from the ceiling. I’ve never had any organs removed and everything was in perfect working order last time I checked.

Is this my problem ?
Sounds like a good deal all around. Do you still have all your teeth? At least six feet tall? No four-foot-long mole hairs sticking out?? Must be your personality.
LONDON (Reuters) - Contact lens wearers risk their sight by washing their faces in tap water, with people in Britain in greatest danger, a leading eye specialist said on Wednesday.

People who wear lenses are most susceptible to a rare and painful condition caused by an amoeba that lives in tap water.

The condition – Acanthamoeba keratitis – causes ulcers to form on the cornea and can lead to blindness.

“It’s a ghastly disease. It’s very resistant to treatment and difficult to eradicate,” John Dart, a specialist at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London told New Scientist magazine.

Rates of infection in the UK are only around one in 30,000, but this is 15 times higher than in the U.S. and seven times as high as in the Netherlands.

Until recently all homes in the UK had to have a cold-water storage tank and the stagnant water in them provides an ideal breeding ground for the amoeba.

Dart said he believes the greatest risk comes from washing while wearing lenses and handling lenses with wet hands. He recommended people keep tap water away from their eyes when they are wearing lenses.
I dare say they didn’t check the water in Taiwan, else Britain would be a distant second.

Mapo you’re really not that paranoid are you? The risk of someone becoming blind from wearing contact lenses is next to nil.

I didn’t realize that I was hitting such a hot button when I mentioned men who wear glasses.

It’s just a matter of personal preference anyway. I personally don’t dig guys in glasses. And if a guy is too much of a wuss to wear contacts because he’s scared, I don’t think I’d want to be with him anyway.

I mean, how am I going to get the guy to participate in life’s really fun activities like bungee jumping or sky diving if he’s afraid of a tiny contact lens?

So… if a guy doesn’t want to wear contacts, he is a “wuss” and, therefore, afraid of doing anything “really fun”? Is that what you are saying? Do you make an exception for people who have physical/medical reasons not to wear contacts or is not wearing contacts an across-the-board “wuss” factor?

I used to wear contacts. But, I found that they dried out my eyes too much. I was always having to add eye drops, etc… and, my eyes would tire very fast. So, now I wear glasses. So, was I “butch” before, but now a “wuss”?

Did it ever occur to you that just because someone doesn’t want to stick a contact into their eye (for whatever reason) they are not necessarily a wuss? I’d venture to assume (though, I have no supporting evidence) that there are lots of men who are into skydiving, bungee jumping, lion taming and the like, who don’t like contacts (or, for that matter, may be freaked out by spiders, or other “minor” things). So, are they “wusses” or not?

And, before you get on my case, I’m not angry or upset by what you said. I’m, rather, curious as to the motivation behind you statement. Because, maybe, the reason you can’t find any “nice guys” is that the minute they show a tiny “flaw” or characteristic that goes against your idea of what a “man” is – e.g., don’t want to wear contacts – you condemn them to “wuss-dom” or something worse?

Quiet Mountain. I said “If a guys too much of a wuss to wear contacts because he’s scared”.
“…because he’s scared” is the qualifying statement here.

I don’t want to date a hypochondriac who thinks he will go blind by wearing contacts. Of course there are people who can’t wear contacts for medical reasons. But wouldn’t you agree that there seems to be a higher proportion of men in Taiwan who wear glasses compared with other places?

One of my Japanese friends even noticed it when I was showing her my pictures from Taiwan. She said “Whaaa, they must study really hard there. Why do they all wear glasses?”

Conversly, lots of Taiwanese women DO wear contacts. I don’t know why the men don’t follow suit. They can’t all have medical problems that prevent them from wearing contacts, can they?

I’m guessing that a semi-adventurous guy would probably be willing to give contacts a try. You said you tried them, right?

That’s all I’m saying.

I tried contacts. Couldn’t see a damn thing. Waste of money.

You seem very fussy about your men, Erhu. That’s probably the #1 reason you’re currently dateless. You pass over a lot of great guys because they fail at perfection.

Hey, I know the feeling. I’m the same way with women. I’m as guilty as anyone of passing over hundreds of nice girls because they don’t meet up to my exacting standards.

Hah! So you claim. But you probably think that it’s hard to catch mad cow disease, too.

What are you, nuts?? Those are dangerous activities. Couldn’t you just play strip poker instead? With appropriate safety precautions, of course.

I apologize, I must have read over the “because he’s scared” part. However, you still are thinking this guy is a “hypochondriac” because he doesn’t want to wear contacts, thinking they may hurt his eyes, etc… That’s a pretty broad brush to paint with, just 'cause the guy has one small phobia. As I said in my previous post, do you not think it possible that normally adventurous guys may have one or two phobias? So, to judge them as “wusses” on those small phobias is a bit excessive?

This was my other point. Again, because of something small like wearing glasses, you are not even willing to give a guy a chance?

There is very little chance you will find someone who meets all the qualities you want. It is virtually impossible to find that exact combination you are looking for. At some point you have to compromise on some of those requirements. If you are not willing to do that, you’ll always be sitting around complaining that there are no good men out there, while rejecting the bespecled (?)… bespeckled (?)… bespectled (?)… ah… f**k it… glasses-wearing gentlman sitting next to you who might turn out to be your knight in shinning GAP eyewear. :sunglasses:

My problem is even more frustrating … I’ve usually got several really cute, intelligent, sweet guys who want to be with me … but for some reason, the ones I want and end up with are always assholes with more issues than me.

As for the glasses thing, all the guys I’ve dated here have worn contacts (even though I don’t really mind glasses … I think it depends on the person), except for the current one who must be the first Taiwanese guy I’ve ever met who has perfect eyesight … must be because he’s never studied a day in his life … come to think of it, I’ve noticed lots of other tai ke’s who don’t wear glasses … maybe that’s the reason!

Shan-san, I believe you are jumping off the cliff of conclusions. AFAIK this has been about a hypothetical guy who is wearing un-stylish glasses instead of spiffy contacts for some unspecified reason, thereby not registering on Erhu’s coolness meter.

In case you were referring to me, I personally don’t like shoving grubby fingers into my eyes two or more times per day, so I would rather deal with glasses than contacts, but contacts hold no terror for me. However, I am scared of spiders, loud noises, heights, flying, gnats, germs, armadillos, women, and papercuts. Oh, almost forgot electrical power lines and X-ray equipment. That covers most of them. Well, the biggies, anyway.

OK. Here’s a picture of my ex. He’s the Japanese hooligan on the left with the guitar.

Certainly there’s gotta be a guy like this in Taipei.

I’m really not so picky, I just need electricity. That’s something that can’t be manufactured. I’m attracted to guys who are cool and crazy.
…and they usually do turn out to be pretty nice too!

You’re surrounded by guys like that, Erhu. This place is chock-a-block with grotesquely unrefined butt-ugly poseurs.

No way Omni. He’s cool to the XYZ. And I haven’t met any guys like that here yet, although I’m sure they’re out there.

Mr. DoFu, I can’t find any reference to Erhu refering to guys wearing “un-stylish” glasses. She just said glasses, in general.

Where in there does she say that the she has a problem with un-stylish glasses? Hmmm? I think you are the one jumping to conclusions.

Most of the guys I see in Taiwan wearing glasses, with the exception of most of those, say, over 40 (which I don’t think Erhu would be interested in), wear very “stylish” glasses. IMHO, they are too stylish – different colors, odd shapes, etc… But, they can’t be described as nerdy by any means.

I would think those types of glasses would go with the types of guys she likes,
I tend to like guys who are artistic and passionate about life.
Though, granted she doesn’t like guys in glasses. Of course, Erhu, you may try finding an “artisitc and passionate” guy who wears glasses and see if he’s willing to wear contacts. Maybe he’s just never thought about it. You know?

QM, if I find a guy who is exciting and cool who is my type…AND he happens to wear glasses, then I promise I won’t pass him up!

Anyway, I’m sorry for causing all this trouble with the glasses comments.
I didn’t mean to offend anyone personally by stating my preference. I’ll be more careful how I state things next time.

That’s all I ask, my child.

No reason, whatsoever, to apologize. I don’t think anyone was truly offended by your comment. I know I wasn’t. I was just curious as to your thinking (and, well, I mis-read, somewhat, what you wrote). We all have preferences and have every right to them. I personally don’t like women with glasses… oh… no… wait… I’m gay… I don’t like women… yeah, that’s it!

NOTE: When I stated I don’t like women, what I meant was, I don’t like women sexually. I was not stating any inherent dislike for the species in general. Please do not flame me.

There’s the theory that some men become gay due to their excessive misogyny. Makes sense. I mean, if I hated women, I’d turn gay.

Ahem. Although I realize that there are, in fact, different varieties of contact lenses (e.g., the silvered ones that wozzizname wore in the Star Trek episode, “Where No Man Has Gone Before”, to indicate that his psychokinetic powers were charged up and ready to rumble), in general, contact lenses are pretty boring – a transparent membrane that one slips unnoticed over one’s eyeballs.

Thus, in the World According to Erhu, all glasses are un-stylish, whereas all contacts are spiffy. Nowhere did I mention any form of “stylish glasses”, nor does the existence of “un-stylish glasses” imply the existence of “stylish glasses” – at least in Erhu’s eyewear value system. Ah, glasshoppah, you must stop reading too much into things.

I’m just waiting for some chicklette to chime in that glasses and contacts are both passe’ and that any really cool guy would go in for eyeball replacement, or at the very least, Lasik. :moo:
I mean, how am I going to get the guy to participate in life’s really fun activities like bungee jumping or sky diving if he’s afraid of a tiny contact lens?
If I were Seinfeld, I would say “I choose not to bungee jump.”
