And Japan is only clean Asian country I have seen. Maybe Singapore too. What not to like about Japan as a tourist? Better food.
I didn’t find Japanese girls attractive. Is like Turkey. A lot of girls are under average looking

If Taiwan had had the foresight to brexit China fifty years ago before China had a chance to tighten its grip and declared itself the independent nation of Taiwan independence would be a fait accompli today… Oh, well, live and learn.
Many Taiwanese people had the foresight. If only CKS, CJK, and the US had the foresight also…
There’s a lot to like about Japan, and I separate Japanese people from their former government.
The former government doesn’t exist. I think Taiwanese know that too.

But that would have been unthinkable for all the patriotic Chinese soldiers who escaped to Taiwan in 1949. They longed to see the return of ROC rule to the mainland.
and pretty sure Taiwan was not wealthy and advanced at the end of WWII
RELATIVELY so. Unlike China, it had not been wrecked by nearly 10 years of warfare (Taiwan only suffered comparatively minor bombing raids in 1944 and 45). And Jp infrastructure investment put Taiwan ahead of China and all of Southeast Asia. The early years of CKS rule saw huge transfer of what infrastructure could be moved to relatively less advanced China, until it became clear the civil war was lost.
They were begged to do so, and insisted on walking out.
Well, according to that article I linked… there was a UN vote (for two seats) which did not pass. Doesn’t sound like Taiwan/KMT/CKS “walked away”. Article did mention that the KMT was not in favor of the two seat system, but also said to not consider their opinion, whatever that means
Bottom line, “walking away” from a UN seat makes it sound like they gave it up voluntarily… that obviously wasn’t the case. It was taken away
“walking away” from a UN seat
I wrote that they walked out, which is historically accurate. CKS’s people decided NOT to listen to the US and Japan who were pleading with them to stay in the General Assembly as “Taiwan.”

Ignore Japan, Taiwan was the most developed area in Asia after Philipines. With almost 3x higher gdp per cepita than China and way better infrastructure.
Taipei on old pictures from Japanese time is very decent city and after KMT was run down with Chinese cheap sense for aesthetics
Chart doesn’t go back to “just after WWI”, starts at 1960. Though of course, HK and SG are much smaller, so maybe not a perfect comp
The Four Asian Tigers (also known as the Four Asian Dragons or Four Little Dragons in Chinese and Korean) are the developed East Asian economies of Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan. Between the early 1950s and 1990s, they underwent rapid industrialization and maintained exceptionally high growth rates of more than 7 percent a year. By the early 21st century, these economies had developed into high-income economies, specializing in areas of competitive advantage. Hong Kong and Singap...
I believe that the KMT was in power for most of those years in the chart (1960-2014)

There was a vote on whether to seat both governments… and the vote failed. Now if the vote passed and the KMT rejected the seat, THAT would be walking out/away
The real story is that the Japanese laid the basic infrastructure and the KMT built on it.

Seem to remember my friends telling me that Hsinchu was basically farm land back in the day… ie. not much Japanese infrastructure to build the science parks. Of course, many of those Taiwanese semiconductor companies got a lot of help from Japanese firms

Shinzu was built by CCK. He wanted to locate it near the Chung-Shan Institute for defense purposes, but he ended up building it near Tsinghua and Jiaoda.
TSMC built its southern fab next to Chengda.
Semiconductors got started by licensing technology from RCA (American).
As someone who lived in China for years, in a part of the country ruled by a Japanese puppet state during WWII, anti-Japanese sentiment was high. And it seems that everywhere else that was occupied by Japan, people hate Japan. Yet Taiwan was occupied by Japan longer than anywhere else, yet the people here love Japan. Why is that? Were the Japanese more lenient to Taiwan than the rest of their empire? Is it a reaction against the KMT?
You know what you can do? Go around and ask Taiwanese people this question.
When I was in Sweden I asked Swedes all kinds of questions.
Shinzu was built by CCK.
There are heaps of problems with your assertions. Hsinchu is an old Minnan settler town, and it became a key administrative center of Shinchiku Prefecture (comprising what is now Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli) during Japanese colonial rule. It has a long and rich history. The science park which you are focusing on was dropped from the sky on farm land during the CCK era (though no doubt someone will show up and claim that this was CKS’s idea). They did it without a shred of investment in public transport and with little (if any) consultation with the locals. This led to a famously miserably divided town—the stories I could tell! Yes, the science park has worked out economically for Taiwan but ayaiyai the social costs were something else.
So no, “Shinju” as you call it was not “built by CCK.”

I’m obviously using Shinzu as a synedoche for the science park.
You think I was referring to farms?

In doing so, you have erased a whole history and a whole community. That’s my objection.
