By that logic, since all Asian societies are highly racist by Western standards, then it’s OK for me as an American to be racist against all Asians. Chinese people in North America have no right to complain about discrimination. Glass houses!
Speaking from my experience with Taiwanese people. Just to be clear, what I write here doesn’t represent my opinions. It’s just what I’ve heard from tw ppl:
Darker skin tone is associated with labor work and poverty and poor hygiene. Also, somehow male Indians are associated with rapists. I did not make this up. I have people telling me I need to be careful because there’re Indian ppl around. Sometimes im even warned about SEA.
I’ve actually come across this kind of situation myself at 坪林溜滑梯 when I was there with my daughter. There was an Indian national at the park who had a 5ish year old girl on his lap while playing on the swing. I naively assumed he was the girl’s dad, but when I spoke to a worried mother nearby, it turned out she didn’t even know him. I went up to him and explained that this isn’t seen as normal behavior and could involve the police. He replied that in India it’s considered normal and that he plays with kids at the park all the time, I told him he could not play with this little girl as the mom didn’t consent. He reluctantly stood up and let the girl off his lap. The mom quickly grabbed her daughter and left.
Later on, while I was joining some church activities in the same park, I saw him again with a group of other Indian friends behind the bushes. I told the church director, who contacted the police. The police didn’t come, saying there wasn’t really a crime, but they did advise us to just keep a close eye on our kids and be careful.
With so few Indians in Taichung, it was honestly pretty shocking to encounter an Indian national doing this kind of creepy stuff. I think common experiences like this are a big reason why many Taiwanese end up with these kinds of impressions.
India does have a rape problem they need to systematically address. If they don’t want this reputation, then they should do something about it.
Taiwan didn’t want to be known a dog and cat eaters so it was banned. Now the attitude towards something like that is disgust and shock for the average Taiwanese.
To be fair, most of the time I can’t even tell if they’re Indian or Bangladesh or south Asian.
And hopefully the Indians here know this is a serious crime and they shouldn’t commit such crime?
I dunno I just feel weird to assume most of them are rapists. I mean, I know there’s a problem in India but I thought it’s regional and most Indians that could work abroad are more educated?
I don’t think I’ve talked to an Indian person in Taiwan so I don’t know much about them but the SEA I’ve talked to are pretty nice and I’ve read nice things from newspapers. I don’t think we’re treating them fairly.
I have a friend who’s mixed and she said she was called a bastard 雜種when she was a kid
I have Indian friends in Australia that I grew up with and they’re really nice people, so I definitely don’t think it’s fair to assume all Indians are like that. However, this situation at 坪林溜滑梯 was my only personal experience with Indians in Taiwan, and it really stuck with me. (Especially being that was my only face to face experience with one in Taiwan.)
yeah in the usa, you tend to see indians owning gas stations and MOTELS> Almost all motels in the USA are owned by indians or pakistanis , people from the sub continent. And almost if not all of the indian/pakistani restaurants too. And these indians who own motels and restuarants generally do very well and are quite well to do if not “stinking” rich.
It is just a good field that word of mouth started on decades ago and they are good at buying up motels and managing them.
Meantime a lot of nail salons/hair cut places tend to be owned/operated by Vietnamese.
A lot of Japanese restaurants happened to owned/operated by Koreans.
Laundry places tend to often be Korean or Chinese.
So yeah somehow certain ethnicities tend to lean towards certain endeavors.
Indians are perceived in the USA, in general as being very demanding. I guess life in India/Pakistan is generally tough and negotiations are certainly part of daily life. Getting the most bang for your buck, along with extras tend to be the thing.. And this is not wrong per se, just that indian and other people from the subcontinent take it to the extreme, generally considered even “worse” than the Chinese. I must be indian in this regard
I read that Thailand is having their hands full of indian visitors who often tend to be from the lower economic scales and tend to do things Thai people dislike. Such as bringing their own food to restaurants and sleeping on the beaches. Again maximizing the buck. I am getting ideas here
it may be of note that the people from the UK generally refer to Indians and Pakis as “Asian” while in East Asia the people tend to refer to them as “indian” (not being able to tell if they are pakistani or bangladeshi). East Asians tend to not call them “Asians” as they have their own designation as “indian”.
i think if i was Assamese Brahmin i would not like to be referred to as “ass” Brahmin. That may be just me? ON that thought was her ass pretty white? Asking for a friend.
yeah i think there was this guy called lee kuan yew or something who was ethnic chinese. And apparently malaysians look down on chinese (cuz chinese own everything) so he went off and convinced the sultans (not the sultans of swing, the other sultans in malaya) to let him have the little bit of land at the end of the peninsula to have the chinese move down there…et voila SINGAPORE.
Uhm black people may not all be crims of course but most crims in the usa are black. That would not be more racist than saying most indians in the usa are successful earners.
Just that “racism” here gets defined by what is perceived as good (being successful) and bad (being criminals).
We don’t see the “racism” in the statement about most indians being successful, but we do see the “racism” when we talk about most criminals being black.
So “racism” is really only defined in the context of being BAD.
cant leave anything of any perceived value in a car in the usa.
i had my prius rear window broken into while at a mall because i took my wife and the two little kids she was babysitting that day to eat lunch and one of the kids had a TOY back pack (not even a real backpack) and we left that in the car. So the window was broken and the toy back pack taken. I was not happy that the kids mom was upset about the backpack and wasnt sorry my car window was broken (cost me 250 ) and i paid for lunch for her two munchkins.
Another time my acura was broken into (and they broke the tiny rear side window which costs 350) just because on that model of acura you could get into the trunk by releasing the latch on the rear seat. There was nothing of value in the car. And nothing could be seen but they broke the glass anyway cuz they can with zero chance of having to pay for it, just to see if there was anything there. So i removed the cargo cover on that car so they can now see clearly into the trunk space.
Now the prius C i have you can easily see into the car, all of the car so i leave nothing of value. On our TT , I removed the cargo cover so that you can see clearly into the trunk and KNOW that there is nothing there to get.
