I can read the “You have 1 new message” button perfectly well, thank you.
Are you sure ? Mine always says “You have no new messages”
I agree, any sounds on websites (together with hundreds of animated gifs, and backgrounds that make the text unreadable) are a big no-no, unless it’s a Taiwanese website
I hate it. I was just putting Forumosa into the background at work when I heard this voice “You’ve got mail”. I thought “what the heck was that?”, everyone was looking at me. It is not a great idea.
I think it’s good. I often miss the fact that I have a new message otherwise. But it is very annoying that it just keeps going until you open the message.

I keep the sound off unless I am looking at something I need with sound.
This is just what I was going to say – at work, I keep my Windows muted (it’s a pretty quiet office, too), unless there’s something important I need to listen to (like Game 7 of the ALCS)
If anyone would like to send an alternative voice, you are welcome to – just send it over to admin (at) forumosa.com in .WAV format. This is an easy replacement. We could even make it a product placement-like thing: “Hi, this is Rick Monday from Morning Call, and you have a Private Message”
Or, “Pi(n)esay, this is Annette Lu… please check your Private Area for a message”

Who cares what you do, grandpa? Why should I turn my sound off just to avoid dumb shit? I like the sound of my harp strings and beeps when I save and open programs. Makes me feel accomplished.
But that electronic MALE voice! I would call that discrimination. It should be a female voice with a lisp!
Please please please, if it’s possible, reduce the set volume of that voice. I keep my computer system and wave volume at a level that allows for comfortable music listening in the evening without disturbing my neighbours. The current setting of ‘You have one message’ bellows out, disturbing me and my neighbours.
