Your first post on Forumosa

Here’s a chance to bring back some oldies but goodies (or maybe some real crap) and to think about how your views may have changed since your first post or first few posts on Forumosa. This was mine:
Chinese on the mainland compared to those in Taiwan
Surprisingly, I still feel the same way about most of the things I wrote in that post. It wasn’t nearly as sloppy as the posts I’ve written since then.

How about yours? Any posts you wrote a long time ago that shock you when you have a look at them now? Any old posts that remind you of how your opinions have changed since you started posting here?

I’d say that one’s good enough to be published in The Economist or any journal of equal standing, JT.

If anyone ever gets around to selecting the best posts from Forumosa for publication as a book, that would certainly be one of the worthiest contenders.

Which brings me to ponder: What might be a good title for such a book? “Insights on Taiwan”? “Taiwan Talkabout”? Any suggestions?

Onew of the defining moments for forumosa (Segue, Oriented) was when the Rants and Raves forum was closed down, as it was getting to much of a handful for gus/christine, and they had been getting threats from ppl about it.

It was a complete free for all, unmoderated, btw. After some debate in the feedback section, they brought it back in moderated form - hey presto, suddenly we had a moderated forum, where we could sling mud as much as we wanted, with someone to make sure that things did not get out of hand. Forumosa’s first “real” discussion forum was born - a place where ppl could vent their frustrations.

Mr. He’s first post was a one liner, defending the old ranth and raves and calling for it to be brought back - with some kind of policing, that is.

[forumosa.com/taiwan/viewtopic.ph … ght=#23765](What do you think about the Rants & Raves Forum?

One of the most memorable posts was made by bu lai en:

My first post:

"Ok, I’ve been reading this forum for a very short time but I have learned the following:…its unsafe to talk to Taiwanese women if you are foreign, the cops are useless, there are a lot of a rsehole foreigners who dont even have degrees and are hellbent on money, the local women, and total disregard for the natives. Many schools treat foreign teachers like temperary babysitters…it seems that thats just the tip of the iceberg.
I want to know some good reasons for living and working there…reasons that are not about money…I live in Japan at the monemt and get paid a lot more than the average teacher there.
I also want to know what chances I have to get a job where I will be a respected member of staff at the school; I have a degree (psychology)and 1 years experience in Japanese senior high schools.
I am going to Taipei next month to check it out for myselfbut right now I’m thinking hat I will be better of in Japan…Can anyone change my mind? I know that some of you have done the Japan thing.
Help me "

Good grief! I can’t beleive I was still thinking about staying in Japan.
Typos and ‘…’ everywhere, at least I’ve cleaned that up a little bit since then.

This is a great thread! :bravo:

We lost a bunch of posts when Oriented became Segue, so [url=http://tw.forumosa.com/t/dominoes-pizza-dispute/1778/6 is all that’s left from those days.

and [url=http://tw.forumosa.com/t/romanization-issues-float-to-the-surface-again/636/1 were hot topics back then too…

So was … Plus ca change:laughing:

Bu lai en’s post is hilarious in retrospect…

.

And 3 minutes later;

My first thread.

What ever did happen to Bu Lai En ?.. anyone else miss him ?

I’ve been online this long and still don’t know how to tag to a specific post. Mine is second to last on the following page.

http://forumosa.com/taiwan/viewtopic.php?t=1507&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=45

This post was on Sept. 5, 2001, almost two years after I joined Oriented.com. Tori Amos’ Silent All These Years comes to mind.

The News did publish a few letters on the topic and went with Tongyong later on down the road. I think it’s time for me to review all of my posts over the years in an attempt at self-awareness.

On second thought … nah! Well… maybe…

[forumosa.com/taiwan/viewtopic.ph … ght=#28538](Married to a Taiwanese, what is my status?

The replies to this put me on track and I haven’t looked back since. Thanks to Mr. He for all the help.

I’ve only been on here regularly since March, so a trip down memory lane for me will have to wait until I’m a golden oldie…

But, off topic but a bit on topic…

How do you link a specific post?

Look at the subject line of the post. Just to the left of the word “Posted:” there’s a little icon. Right click on that and copy the link.

I’d just like to point out that I never did post again on Oriented. So there! :raspberry:

Brian

Left click, right? :idunno:

If you right click and then check the properties you will end up with the link for the icon. But then I am using Chinese winXP

ahhhhhhhh the memories

its been what… 10 minutes?

yikes. the time, it flies!

Nope, right click → “Copy Link Location” or whatever it’s called.

Gah, what an arse first post. Then again, I had only been here 6 days, I blame that. Yeah. That should work.

Ah, the good ol’ rough and tumble days…

So innocent.

I just stumbled upon [url=http://tw.forumosa.com/t/dont-touch-that-accident-victim/970/4 classic May 2002 pos by Wolf. It was in response to a rash of ‘silly’ new posts.
Not that you will run out of topics but here are some that you should try:

– Don’t run while carrying scissors!
– Tea eggs! What a concept!
– Toilet paper in squares?
– I stubbed my toe!
– Chinese - look at all those squiggly lines!
– Those mosquitoes really bite, eh?
– People are putting ads in my mailbox!
– 117 - is that a real person or a computer?
– Coagulated pig’s blood soup - are you kidding?
– Where can I find Dr. Scholl’s foot pads?
– School uniforms - should English students wear them?
– Someone spit betel nut juice on the street!
– Buddhism and Taoism - which rocks?
– Don’t stick your finger in a light socket!
– Chinese restaurants - don’t look in the kitchen!
– I saw a stray cat!
– Pull my finger!
How many of those have been covered since then?

I reckon about 50%.
