2024 August Dual Nationality Petition Open Discussion

you have helped a few mutual friends and others get citizenship. I think you are right. It’s not about respect, it is about saying what people want to hear. Not the reality, which is if you want it get it done and don’t wait on some petition.

Maybe if I vaguely tell them that they’ll become millionaires in the future they will “respect” me lol.

Not only that but the realities you need to face.
For example…
Yes. Taiwan is absolutely homogeneous and a large group want to keep it that way. They see what has become of the UK for example and don’t want that here.

When I go through the airport in Taiwan some people are surprised I’m a Taiwanese because I’m part of the absolute minority out of a very homogeneous society. - I’m not going to sugar coat it and pretend we’re not.

Absolutely, many are actually reading these threads and don’t want to join for fear of being ridiculed, asking me questions about the process.

The more you write the more I am convinced you know very little about this place.

And yes I am aware of your citizenship moves, which are not the same thing as actually knowing what you’re talking about.

And yes if you post ignorant things people may actually point them out. I guess you could solve that problem by stopping and thinking before you post such things.

Guy

And you say that to a Taiwanese… (as a foreigner)

I was referring to the moves I did as a foreigner. Changing the policies of both Cathay and Esun bank in regards to credit cards.

Esun also made personal loans easier too.

Ignorant is when you say they aren’t true without pointing to facts.

There is no problem to solve. The problem is with those who have their heads stuck firmly in the sand.

Perhaps I should instead think of what offends you and avoid posting that.

Master of Common Sense

Ask the Taiwanese themselves. Or do you ever talk to locals? I see a society that over the years has become increasingly accepting of change and people from diverse backgrounds.

I also spend a lot of time in the aboriginal community so perhaps I see a different Taiwan than you do.

You clearly don’t have any assets in America so I’ll take your opinion with a grain of salt.

I watched the whole thing and still think your comment is ignorant. American identity is not based on race. He’s right about that.

You seem to be overstating your contribution. Particularly given the attitude of disdain you’ve displayed towards Taiwanese here.

Calling is out a poster here for posting something ignorant is not the same as calling out all Taiwanese. No matter how much you or comfy think you do, you do not represent the voice of 23M people.

Yes many Taiwanese don’t understand their own immigration law and if they did I have confidence they would care because they are generally an open-minded, well-educated populace.

Generally speaking, Taiwanese want their country to be better.

It’s up to us to show them that we are up to the job.

Guy

Ummm…. Excuse me?

So you’re calling Taiwanese people ignorant? That’s quite a huge amount of distain.

Americans don’t need to know their own U.S. immigration laws because Biden and Harris let people walk across the border… or fly them in.

So mind telling your contribution? (Other than signing a petition on dual nationality)

So you think a few foreigners on Forumosa who signed a petition know what 23 million Taiwanese think?

If this were such a big issue for them… and 23 million people really wanted this… I’m sure some politician would’ve already used it to score some easy votes.

Keep things factual. Don’t get personal. Follow forum rules.

We are all on the same side.

I just want to state for the record that I really hope the petition reaches the 5,000

I’m excited that it will.

However, I wouldn’t hold my hopes up too high that the MOI will change the renunciation requirement following this petition.

The reality is that the MOI is most likely to (which I hope not) knock it down.

We need to discuss the possible reasons for it and understand it better in order to defeat it.

That’s my 50 cents

For the record I already answered this but the entire post was removed. Myself along with many other foreigners have contributed much to this society and are just as deserving of citizenship as anyone else.

Regardless of your business here … I also had businesses here and employed locals…

you do not deserve citizenship here more than anyone else.

Deserve has nothing to do with it. I do hope the MOI sees fit to fulfil your hopes and dreams. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

“Taiwar”?

Guy

Close enough.

Just as close as we are to dual citizenship without renunciation…

The AI is having issues.

I do think those that contribute here to society have shown their worth. That is why the policies continue to change although gradually. Xiaofei is right that countries allow dual citizenship to incentivize people to continue to stay and contribute. They did not have to invest in our upbringing but reap the benefits of our contributions.

I don’t know what you expect to achieve by adding negativity to this thread. Your situation is not relevant to the petition.

Have you ever directly spoken to a sitting MP in person about this issue?

No I haven’t, but I’ve spoken to the business leaders I know, and I’m working through the channels that I have some of whom know sitting MPs.

What’s the purpose of this question? I believe you said you did.

Then no taiwanese persons should be asked to sign the petition. Their situation to the petition is not relevant.
