This is my solution to tanking which isn’t actually the problem.

The NBA tanking problem isn’t at the bottom, it’s in the middle

The NBA’s biggest issue isn’t bad teams. It’s the teams stuck in the middle.

Right now, the system creates three groups:

  • Top teams: competing for a title.

  • Bottom teams: rewarded with high lottery odds.

  • Middle teams: not good enough to contend, not bad enough to get a top pick.

And the middle is the worst place to be.

If you’re a 9th–11th seed:

  • You’re likely a first-round exit or play-in loss.

  • You get a mid-first-round pick.

  • You have no clear path to a superstar.

So what do teams do?

They tank. Not because they want to, but because the system punishes competitive mediocrity.

A better solution

Give the best lottery odds to the teams just outside the playoffs, not the worst teams.

For example:

Contenders: low odds.

  • Worst teams: lower odds than today.

  • Fringe teams (9th–12th seeds): highest odds.

What this fixes

  1. Tanking becomes pointless

Being the worst team no longer gives the biggest reward.

  1. The middle becomes valuable

Teams fight to stay competitive instead of blowing it up.

  1. Small markets keep their stars

A team with a superstar can stay in the play-in range and still have strong lottery odds, instead of trading their star to tank.

After Luka Flagg, it is quite possible, if not evident, that the system is highly rigged anyway.

It’s American sports, I don’t really care about tanking, part of the game, like the All-Star Game and the pointless in-season tournament with those ugly colorful courts.

Is it April 1 already? Holy moly. He is definitely not know for high-scoring games.

Playoffs start local time Sunday 1am.

I don’t think many people here care for basketball. Only boring baseball. Well, l watch baseball too, but it’s just one of many sports l watch.

Should be OKC, Nuggets or Spurs from the West, Pistons, Celtics, and Cavs from the East.

I like the Nuggets and the Cavs.

Can’t stand the Thunder, Spurs are too young and inexperienced, like the Pistons.

I feel like the NBA has become less entertaining for basketball fans. I used to love it more. It felt like every team had its own identity and play style. Now teams play very similarly and there’s not really anymore heated rivalry.

I hate that players get along now. It was more fun when you hated certain teams and players.

Not all players like each other, especially the dirty ones like Dillon Brooks and Jalen Willams are really hated.

Two surprises in the playoffs so far, both the Nuggets and Celtics are out in the first round. The first one is quite surprising, considering how undermanned the T’Wolves are and how good Jokic is.

Thunder and Spurs are the favorites in the West. Luka coming back will probably not make a difference. Wemby is unstoppable for the Spurs.

The Magic had their chance to close out the series against the Pistons. Now, they will probably go down in Detroit. Cavs-Raptors is quite even, hard to say which team will win Game 7, probably the Cavs with home advantage.

Gone fishing: Lakers and 76ers, both teams hampered by injuries. Even with Luka returning, I doubt the Lakers would have had a chance. With a healthy Luka, this could have been a fun series. SGA is not my favorite player, but he gets things done. A dynasty in the making? New York might finally have the chance to go and win it all. Both Cleveland and Detroit look beatable. Wemby with the brutal foul against Nazr, I wonder why he was so triggered. Not sure how this will effect the next game. I guess no suspension, but that is going to be a heated affair, for sure.

Wemby is turning into a real beast. He’s amazingly skilled for his size. Always makes me think of a
:giraffe:

A bit like Yao, but with range and handles. Yao was too slow, although he had a good touch from the FT line. The only thing that could and will most likely stop him are injuries. Don’t think he will play much after 30, but till then, 8 years or so, total domination.

Impressive road win by Wemby today against the defending champs. 41 pts and 24 reb is not to shabby, even if it was a double OT game. His length is just impossible to guard down low. The last basket of the game, I believe it was the last, he just went down below the basket and received the ball for an uncontested dunk, the defender didn’t even try and jump. But what is even more impressive about his game is the ease with which he makes long shots. He had one logo shot in OT, which looked effortless.

Knicks make it to the finals, first time since 1999. Harden is so done. Even as a second option, he manages to make his team choke big time. He can be good in the regular season, but under pressure he can’t make shots and he turns the ball over.

Very impressive win by the Spurs. Cold-blooded 3-pt shooting got them trough. Impressive, because they are still very young, Game 7 on the road against the reigning champs with the season MVP. Holmgreen did not show up might have been the most important factor.

Now Brunson vs. Wemby. This one could easily go to seven games too.

Never expected these hair guys to be that good.

Actually, most believe whichever team won the West would/will win the whole thing. East winner a step below these 2 teams.

The Knicks have been very convincing, though, and Brunson has become a real star, not superstar just yet, but very good.

In the East. Their path was easy.

Either way, I’m just happy OKC lost. Hate that team

I would not go as far, but I don’t really like them. SGA is great, but I am not a fan of his herky-jerky style. Holmgren is good, but not Wemby good. Caruso was on fire in this series, but I cannot warm up to him. Hartenstein is very good at those high-arc floaters, but nah. Then there are those wingers who play dorty… OK, there is debate, whether it’s just physical or outright dirty. Either way, not a fan. Knicks or Spurs, whoever wins, I am fine with that.

Wemby playing like a point guard and pulling up for logo threes is just too good to not like.

As my children say, NYC will burn whether Knicks win or lose the championship.

What does ā€œburnā€ mean here. Like the fans will be excited?

Or riots after the end of the series, regardless who wins?

He fell to the ground 47/137 attempts. More than 33% of his shots he fell down in the conference finals.

I can’t watch this type of basketball.
