There was a ton of Chinese students in American university, obviously it was all money, somehow Chinese students have a ton of money. COVID ended that. My Calculus class at UT Austin was literally 80% Chinese.

Perhaps take a minute to consider that, for Metro Vancouver and many other areas: the roads are already a disaster for getting around, school portable use is through the roof, hosptial wait times are getting to the 10 hour point (for those that arenât closing for 24-48 hours biweekly due to lack of staff) ⌠shall I continue? The infrastructure for adding significant numbers to the population just isnât there.
On another note, the local unis are on a hiring freeze, as budgets are down with the decreases in expected numbers of internationals as well as lack of space and recent wage hikes (finally) that still donât match recent/past inflation. Weâre being greeted with more and more local and international students who cannot write a grammatically correct sentence, in courses where the butts in seats have increased by 50% âŚ

More like lack of will. If space isnât there, build up. How do you think Hong Kong can cope? It has probably the densest population in the world.
Itâs more like domination of nationalism in western countries. They want foreigners out.
And yet, the masses are not as agitated as they should be. 
Ok, the Conservatives are 20 points ahead in the polls, but never underestimate the stupidity of the electorate that can be pacified with copious amounts of sewer water, also known as Tim Hortons coffee!!!
If they really want to deal with too many students, they would tighten the labour mobility provisions that allow students a path to citizenship.

Based on what I am seeing this year, this phenomonon is not restricted to Canada (or the Lower Mainland) alone.

But as folks like Scott Galloway would say, the elite Ivys are just boutiques in the larger educational landscape, with a miniscule number of students compared to the system at large. Galloway has been calling on the large land-grant public universities in the US to ramp up the numbers, giving more kids a shot, even the kids without a sterling high school record. I doubt however he is teaching or will be teaching those kids composition skills.

Canada is a giant country, second largest country in the world after Russia, and with a very low population for their size. They got plenty of space.
Donât let them all live in Vancouver or Toronto. Require them to live in smaller cities or in the countryside. Build new industries based on new places. Too cold? Thereâs a lot Canada can do for industry, oil refinery, research and development, what have you. Have the new immigrants work to build these new cities up.
Canada has room for many millions of they donât all congregate in big cities.
Let welders, HVAC tech, mechanics, machinists in. Donât require reams of proof for it. Can they do the work and can they become certified with a little training? Yes? In you go but youâre going to be constructing a new town they established in the Yukon territory along the highway.
Thatâs the problem with Canadaâthose of us with very good US and UK and overseas qualifications? Why would we stay long term? I mean, I did the public service thing for almost a decade, so that my Taipei family got citizenship for the time I was resident and working, but annoyed a lot of regional brass who I continue to despise. Many are Patagonia-wearing, myopic, dumb, politically correct, over-polite nincompoops of woke intolerance that couldnât open and operate a peanut stand outside of Canada. The electorate get what they deserve.

Can the average Chinese citizen just go live in Hong Kong just because they feel like it? No? Well Canada can stipulate that immigrants canât live in big cities unless they have skills that city needs.

To be fair it seems western countries leadership has lost their collective minds. Theyâre doing everything they can do regress, not progress their countries. They want their country be a limited access paradise, except it wonât be paradise for long.
Infrastructure costs money, refugees arenât exactly bringing stacks of cash with them. And most new citizens donât want to live in a frozen backwater. People mostly prefer to live further south near major population centers (and, let us be honest, closer to other people like them)

I did my part regulatory wise, to push for red seal trades to be recognized nationally. I do, from a regulatorâs perspective, think some oversight is needed for international applicants, as it would be dangerous to not test the equivalence. Itâs about making the process easy and with not too much red tape. But some oversight is needed.
Sure, some tests or something. Show them you can lay a good bead, can diagnose and fix equipment problems, know how to charge and recover refrigerant.
But paper donât mean much and theyâre easy to fudge.
